Psychologically intense books like 1984, Crime and Punishment?

Big bonus points: if the characters change a lot. (positive or negative character arcs are both great) I love psychological/horror stories. Reading about the character's turmoils and tension and how they respond to them is great. I have no limits for disturbing content, but torture porn can be boring. I also really liked Animal Farm [...]
