A book with a magic system, changing setting, a bit of romance and friendship, and high stakes!

Just finished Will of the Many and Strength of the Few and loved Vis as our main character. In the WotM especially I enjoyed his journey, the changing scenery (not a lover of a closed door setting), the challenges he faces, his friendships, and his time at the academy.
