Books where the setting is the best character

just finished Last of the Mohicans and while all the characters were one dimensional and without development (to say nothing of a meandering, pointless plot), the setting of the primordial North American forest was awesome and felt like a character unto itself what books have you come across with a similar setting? by curt_schilli
