The real reason Granit Xhaka snubbed Chelsea transfer to stay at Sunderland

Granit Xhaka will NOT be moving to Chelsea as the former Arsenal captain has decided he wants to stay at Sunderland, according to reports.

The Premier League was left stunned last week when it was reported that Chelsea had agreed personal terms with Xhaka, who is currently captaining Switzerland at the World Cup.

Xabi Alonso was pushing for the transfer, determined to reunite with the midfielder who led his Bayer Leverkusen side to an invincible league and cup double in 2024.

The 33-year-old was very keen on the move to Stamford Bridge, and all that remained was for a transfer fee to be agreed between the Blues and the Black Cats.

An opening offer of £8million was immediately rejected but it was said that Chelsea would return with an improved bid, as they look to sign experienced players who can bring some much needed experience to the squad.

But they needn’t bother anymore, as Sky Sports report that after holding talks with Sunderland, Xhaka is now no longer interested in the Chelsea transfer.

Xhaka, who previously played for Arsenal from 2016 to 2023, made a surprise return to the Premier League last summer, moving to the Stadium of Light in a £17m deal.

He was quickly made club captain and played a vital role as Sunderland defied the odds to not only avoid relegation but finish seventh, qualifying for the Europa League.

It is said that the opportunity to lead the club through their first European campaign in 53 years was too good for the Swiss star to turn down.

Chelsea finished 10th last season following a very disappointing campaign and will play no European football for the second time in four seasons.

Moreover, Xhaka remains impressed by the Black Cats’ ambition and long-term strategy. That, and his strong affinity for the club and its supporters, has played a key role in the U-turn.

Following Switzerland’s round of 32 win against Algeria on Thursday night, Xhaka was asked about his future but did not want to address it.

He told reporters: ‘That’s not my job. I have my management for that. I want to concentrate fully on the World Cup.’

It remains to be seen how this affects Chelsea’s transfer plans, though they no longer need to worry about losing Enzo Fernandez after Real Madrid publicly denied that they had any interest in signing him.
