"textContent": "The weather is grim in Orlando around Inter&Co Stadium (Picture: Getty Images)\n\nEngland are due to play Costa Rica on Wednesday night but the game is under threat as a storm rages in Orlando and kick-off has been delayed.\n\nThe match was due to kick off at 4pm local time (9pm UK time) but has initially been delayed by 20 minutes as torrential rain pours down in Florida.\n\nThere has also been lightning and thunder in the area, with strict rules on when a stadium can be opened in those circumstances.\n\nWhenever there is a lightning strike within eight miles, the stadium cannot be opened for at least 30 minutes.\n\n## All the World Cup action\n\nGet everything you need to know about the World Cup – England updates, the games to watch and stories you missed – in five minutes, at 1pm, every day. Sign up here.\n\nAn update from Inter&Co Stadium at around 2.30pm local time read: ‘The gates are open, but the seating bowl remains closed due to inclement weather ahead of today’s @England vs. @laselecrc_ match. Fans currently inside the stadium are asked to seek shelter in the concourse.’\n\nThere is optimism that the game will be played even with a significant delay, with rain becoming lighter after extremely heavy showers.\n\nEngland’s team was confirmed around an hour before the rescheduled kick-off, with Tuchel naming a string starting XI. Jordan Pickford plays behind a defence of Reece James, Ezri Konsa, John Stones and Nico O’Reilly.\n\nDeclan Rice, Elliot Anderson and Jude Bellingham are in midfield, with a front three of Noni Madueke, Anthony Gordon and Harry Kane.\n\n> More water than grass… teams will arrive as normal. Each thunder strike means the stadium can’t be opened for at least 30 minutes and we’ve just had a real crack!! Anymore after 2.45pm local time will impact KO. Told the water will clear quickly… 👀 pic.twitter.com/qHzVXPttxS\n>\n> — Ian Dennis (@Iandennisbbc) June 10, 2026\n\nWhile England’s final match before their World Cup campaign begins is important preparation, the last thing Thomas Tuchel would want is to put his players in danger of injury.\n\nLightning strikes could delay kick-off (Picture: Getty Images)\n\nWith the original kick-off at 4pm local time, there is plenty of wriggle room for the game to be played even after a delay, with time for supporters to leave safely afterwards.\n\nHowever, the enthusiasm to push for the friendly to be played in treacherous conditions is unlikely to be high.\n\nThe pitch at Inter&Co Stadium is in a dreadful state (Picture: Getty Images)\n\nEngland are due to play an unofficial behind-closed-doors friendly against club side Miami FC on Thursday.\n\nIf the match against Costa Rica cannot be played on Wednesday then that could take more importance for Tuchel’s intended starting XI in the first World Cup game against Croatia.\n\nThat game kicks off at 9pm UK time on Wednesday June 17 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.\n\n> Here’s a look at the Inter&Co Stadium in Orlando ahead of England’s game against Costa Rica tonight 😳 pic.twitter.com/xw0s6bacSs\n>\n> — ITV Football (@itvfootball) June 10, 2026\n\n**_More to follow and updates as we get them from Orlando…_**\n\nComment now Comments \nAdd Metro as a Preferred Source on Google\nAdd as preferred source\n",
