A EuroMillions winner who saved a police officer’s life just days before scooping the £1 million jackpot has been killed in a suspected hit and run.

Anthony Canty, 39, was knocked off his bicycle in Tiptree, Essex, at 6.30pm on Thursday, May 21, and died in hospital four days later.

It was six years ago, in April 2020, while the dad-of-two was on the bus home from Witham train station to Maldon that the police officer collapsed ‘in [his] lap’.

He said he described ringing the bell to stop the bus and giving the officer CPR with the help of the 999 operator and first aid training he had at work. Mr Canty went on to win the jackpot in the May 5 draw days later.

Essex Police said an 18-year-old man was initially arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving while unfit through drink and or drugs, and failing to stop.

He remains under investigation and enquiries continue, they added.

Officers are appealing for information from anyone who saw or has footage of a black Ford KA car being driven in the area around the time of the collision that morning.

Mr Canty was pictured with his partner spraying champagne and holding up a giant cheque following their big win.

He vowed not to give up his day job as an engineer, but said he would be taking some time off to take his daughters to Disneyland when travel restrictions eased.
