This Renaissance relic is one of Sicily’s most photographed landmarks and can be found on the west flank of the church of Santa Caterina.\n\nThe fountain represents the twelve Olympians and other mythological figures (Picture: Getty Images)\n\nSpeaking of churches, Palermo has some pretty epic ones. One of the most important to include on your list is Palermo Cathedral.\n\nIt’s free to enter. However, if you want to make your visit extra special, it’s recommended you set aside an hour or two to climb the stairs and explore the church’s rooftop.\n\nYou can either buy a combined ticket for €13 that includes access to the Monumental Area and rooftop, or for €7, you can head straight for the top.\n\nFor views that won’t cost you a penny, walk through Parco della Favorita for a lovely vista of the city and Monte Pellegrino.\n\nWe also recommend checking out Teatro Massimo, the largest opera house in Italy, and Mondello Beach, about 25 minutes from Palermo’s centre.\n\n> @plannedbykyla\n>\n> 45 mins from Palermo by bus or 20 mins if you have a car! Anthony Bourdain’s heaven.\n\nFor a dessert you won’t forget, go to Santa Caterina d’Alessandria.\n\nHidden in a small room within a monastery, this place makes what many call ‘the best cannoli in Italy’.\n\nMade from secret recipes passed down through generations, it’s a special corner of Palermo that’s well worth visiting.\n\n## What’s the cheapest way to get to Palermo?\n\nIf you’re close to Newcastle Airport, check out Jet2’s new summer schedule.\n\nThe flights are infrequent, though, with services just once a week on Tuesdays. Return fares start from around £150 in June.\n\nFor Londoners, travelling over the summer is expensive.
