Manchester United are confident over securing deals to sign Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali and Atalanta’s Ederson, according to reports in Italy.

United have made strengthening their midfield a top priority for the summer transfer window and are targeting two new signings.

Several options are being considered by United, including Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson, Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton, Brighton’s Carlos Baleba and West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes.

However, Sky Sport Italy reports that United’s top two targets are Tonali and Ederson.

The report claims that United’s hierarchy are ‘confident’ of agreeing a deal to sign both players, although they face strong competition from Atletico Madrid for Ederson.

The midfielder, who has been left out of Brazil’s World Cup squad by Carlo Ancelotti, is valued at €45 million (£38.9m).

Tonali, meanwhile, is about to finish his third season at Newcastle following his £55m move from AC Milan in 2023.

Newcastle have missed out European football for next season and are already in talks to sell Anthony Gordon to Bayern Munich in order to ease their financial concerns.

Eddie Howe is desperate to keep Tonali at St James’ Park but reports in Italy this week have claimed that Newcastle would be willing to sell the 26-year-old for €100m (£86m).

Earlier this season, reports in Brazil had claimed that United were also considering a move for Tonali’s Newcastle teammate Bruno Guimaraes.
