  "textContent": "A ‘kind and compassionate’ teacher died on Thursday (Picture: Hampshire Chronicle/Solent News)\n\nA teacher collapsed and died in front of pupils as they were getting ready to sit their GCSE exams plunging the school into lockdown.\n\nPupils at Kings’ School in Winchester had arrived on Thursday morning when an air ambulance was called.\n\nIt followed an ‘urgent medical situation’ involving a long-standing female member of staff named locally as Mrs Bamford.\n\nTributes left outside the school described her as ‘compassionate and kind’.\n\nOne wrote: ‘Thank you for being the kind of teacher that inspired and taught with kindness and compassion.\n\n##  Sign up for all of the latest stories\n\nStart your day informed with Metro's **News Updates** newsletter or get **Breaking News** alerts the moment it happens.\n\n‘You will be so missed and you leave a hole that can never be filled. She will be missed but never forgotten.’\n\nThe teacher has been named locally as Mrs Bamford (Picture: Submitted/Hampshire Chronicle)\n\nStudents were sent home early but the year 11 exams continued as scheduled.\n\nIn an email seen by Hampshire Chronicle, the school said: ‘Due to an ongoing situation in school today related to an urgent medical situation, involving a member of staff, we have taken the decision to close the school early.\n\n‘All pupils are safe and remain supervised. We are now beginning a controlled dismissal process.\n\n‘All year 11 exams will remain as scheduled. We anticipate minimal disruptions, but we will keep you updated.’\n\nHampshire Police said: ‘We were called at 9.54am on Thursday, 14 May by ambulance colleagues to a report of a medical incident at Kings’ School in Romsey Road, Winchester.\n\n‘Sadly a woman in her 40s was pronounced dead at the scene. Her next-of-kin have been made aware.
