"textContent": "Ingrid, Frank and Zizzi waiting for their owners to vote at a polling station in London (Picture: AP)\n\nThe 2026 local elections are the biggest electoral test for Sir Keir Starmer since the entire country last went to the polls two years ago.\n\nWhile it’s been widely predicted they will be disastrous for the Prime Minister, some early indications Labour might not have as bad a night as it feared.\n\nHowever, the worst may be still to come when Wales announces its results, with the party expected to lose control of the country for the first time since devolution.\n\nReform has quickly established itself as the big winner of the election, picking up hundreds of council seats across England.\n\nNigel Farage’s party is also likely to make major inroads at Holyrood and the Senedd, where polls suggest it could finish in the top two for both.\n\n## Want to understand politics better?\n\nMetro's senior politics reporter Craig Munro breaks down political chaos into easy to follow insight, in **Metro** 's politics newsletter Alright, Gov? Sent every Wednesday. Sign up here.\n\nEvery borough in London is up for grabs in the election, and Labour and the Tories will be nervously watching to see if Reform or the Green Party can wrest control anywhere.\n\nWe’re still waiting to see the first of the six mayoral results for different parts of London.\n\nSix county councils in East Anglia and the south of England will also be declaring their results later.\n\nThe Senedd could host the most dramatic result of the May 7 elections, with Labour likely to lost control in Wales. Seats will begin to be declared later this morning.\n\nWe will also have to wait until later in the morning for the Scottish Parliament election results to start emerging, as there is no overnight count.\n\n******Get in touch with our news team by emailing us atwebnews@metro.co.uk.******\n\n**For more stories like this,** check our news page.\n\nComment now Comments \nAdd Metro as a Preferred Source on Google\nAdd as preferred source\n",
