Violent clashes have erupted between Newcastle and Sunderland supporters ahead of the north-east derby match this afternoon.

Fans of the clubs ‘threw punches’ and ‘hurled missiles’ at each other outside St James’ Park.

A group of Sunderland fans were ‘attacked’ when they broke away from the police escort and walked through Newcastle supporters, the Telegraph’s Luke Edwards reported on X.

Videos circulating on social media show officers trying to hold back a throng of Magpies’ fans as away supporters walked into the stadium.

A Sunderland bus was also pelted with bottles and cans as it left St James’ Park.

Other clips online show a Newcastle fan being given CPR close to where the altercation took place, although it is unclear if the incident is linked to the violence.

Northumbria Police have largely kept both groups of supporters separate and the clashes appeared to end quickly.

The Premier League match between the two north-east rivals kicked off at midday on Sunday.
