Girl, 15, dies after collapsing during academy football match

Oxford United have announced 15-year-old youth player Amelia Aplin has died after collapsing during an academy match.
Amelia collapsed during Oxford Girls’ Academy game against Fulham at the club’s training facility in Horspath on Saturday.
‘It is with immense sadness that we announce the passing of 15-year-old Academy player, Amelia Aplin,’ a statement from the club read.
‘The thoughts and sincere condolences from everyone at Oxford United are with Amelia’s family, friends, teammates and coaches.
‘We would like to place on record our appreciation for the efforts of the medical staff at both Oxford United and Fulham Football Club, along with the emergency services.’
Oxford United Women were due to play Real Bedford on Sunday but the game was postponed after Amelia’s tragic death.
‘The club will offer support to Amelia’s family, players, coaches and staff impacted by this tragic event,’ the club added.

‘We would ask that the family’s privacy is respected at this incredibly difficult time.’
The FA Women’s National League said they were ‘deeply saddened’ by Amelia’s passing and said they would ‘support the club’ through this ‘incredibly sad time’.
‘We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Oxford United youth player Amelia Aplin,’ they said.

The FA added: ‘We are deeply saddened by the tragic passing of Amelia.
‘Our thoughts go out to her family, friends and everyone associated with Oxford United Women at this incredibly difficult time.’
Oxford fan, Declan Edwards, also paid tribute to ‘bright talent’ Amelia on social media, saying he was ‘absolutely heartbroken’.
‘A bright 15-year-old talent gone far too soon,’ he said. ‘My deepest condolences to her family, friends, teammates and everyone at Oxford United. Rest in peace, Amelia.’
Oxfordshire Councillor Liam Walker added: ‘This is utterly devastating news.
‘My thoughts are with Amelia’s family and all those impacted by this awful loss. She will forever be a yellow.’
