"textContent": "Matt Weston and Tabitha Stoecker celebrate winning gold after the Skeleton Mixed Team Final (Picture: Getty)\n\nThe BBC was forced into making an embarrassing apology after missing the start of of Matt Weston’s history gold medal run at the Winter Olympics.\n\nTeam GB’s glorious Games in Milan and Cortina is set to hit new heights after a ‘Super Sunday’ on the slopes and chutes sent records tumbling.\n\nCharlotte Bankes and Huw Nightingale clinched the first ever snow gold with victory in the mixed team snowboard-cross, and five hours later Weston and Tabby Stoecker won the mixed team skeleton.\n\nTeam GB have now won three golds after **Weston** ‘s win in the men’s skeleton on Friday – and raises hopes the final medal total will eclipse the five earned in Sochi and Pyeongchang respectively.\n\nIt was another incredible performance by Weston, who found himself in fourth place, three-tenths adrift, after Stoecker lost time on the bottom stages of the run.\n\nDemonstrating the skill and calmness that has brought him three successive World Cup titles and a first men’s Olympic skeleton gold for Britain, he blasted off at his start to make up the deficit almost immediately and then found the perfect line to win by 0.17 seconds.\n\nSo quick was Weston’s start, however, that it was missed by the TV cameras that instead focused on his coach.\n\nThe TV cameras cut away as Matt Weston began his quest for gold (Picture: BBC)\n\nThe cameras were back on the Team GB star once he had started sprinting (Picture: BBC)\n\nWeston’s 0.12-second reaction time showed on a graphic in the corner but the main screen was concentrated on the Team GB coach shouting words of encouragement.\n\nThe embarrassing gaffe was not the fault of the BBC – the TV feed will have come from the Olympic broadcast – but commentator John Hunt felt obliged to offer an apology nonetheless.\n\nHe said: ‘Oh, what are they doing? What are they playing at? That’s terrible.\n\n‘That’s a great start. Sorry about the pictures but Matt is on his way.’\n\nThat unfortunate broadcasting mistake did not, however, detract from what was a stunning achievement by the British duo.\n\n> We'll just be watching this on repeat! Matt Weston and Tabby Stoecker take home the gold medal for Great Britain! pic.twitter.com/4cRIkkgl1m\n>\n> — BBC Sport (@BBCSport) February 15, 2026\n\n‘There’s some great names in the British Winter Olympian history,’ said a jubilant Weston. ‘I think to even consider putting my name next to those is a massive honour.\n\n‘I don’t want to be the one to say what position I am in there, but to have my name next to those is absolutely amazing. A lot of those guys have been a massive inspiration, especially within the sliding sports as well.’\n\nWeston was unaware of the ground he had to make up on eventual silver medallists Susanne Kreher and Axel Jungk, instead focusing on his own start.\n\nHe explained: ‘When I’m at the top of the track I kind of put my helmet just low enough that I can’t see what the splits are. All I was doing was listening to my coach telling me the timings and all I could think was don’t false start.\n\n‘I was just staying very calm and trying to be collected, just tick the boxes, get the job done and hopefully that would have been enough and it turns out it was.’\n\nStoecker had finished fifth in the women’s competition on Saturday evening and had plenty of faith in Weston’s ability to find the time.\n\n> A brilliant and emotional moment for Tabby Stoecker and Matt Weston! pic.twitter.com/Y8UCHjNFGp\n>\n> — BBC Sport (@BBCSport) February 15, 2026\n\nShe said: ‘What an honour – it’s incredible. The medal is really heavy, it’s gold and I get to share it with Matt. It’s more than I could have ever hoped for.\n\n‘I think I crossed the line and then all I was really focused on was getting to the TV screen to watch Matt come down.\n\n‘He’s the individual Olympic champion and his standard of sliding is insane. So I had a lot of faith that he was going to lay down another exceptional run.\n\n‘But also it’s always nerve wracking when you have to watch the clock and the splits and you’re not sure how it’s going to go. But the flow that he has on the sled, it’s just unmatched, so from about halfway down I could feel that the gold was coming.’\n\nComment now Comments Add Metro as a Preferred Source on Google Add as preferred source ",
