PS: I'm not particularly interested in any responses telling me not to use optical media. They're part of my strategy, I know their weaknesses and I'm cool with it.
Earlier today, I was inadvertently prodded into checking that a particular set of folder structures on my computer was backed up on optical media as well as my other drives. By happy coincidence it turned out that the folder structures in question weighed a little less than what a 4GB DVD-R disc can store, as I have lots of 4GB DVD-R discs spare and they're much cheaper than say dual-layer discs or BD-Rs. I like to have stuff backed up on optical as a means of diversifying my backup strategies.
My home directory (minus a few less essential folder structures) once xz compressed weighs a bit less than an ~8GB DVD DL disc so naturally I've been veracrypting the backup data and transferring it to disc, but then it occurred to me today that if I compressed the folder structures each into a separate archive, then...
