Distressed bluejay in my backyard

Saw this stumbling around this morning and after a little while realized it could not fly. It moved about 25 feet on the ground from under one plum tree to the other. I have hummingbird feeders hanging from each of these trees. Hummingbirds have been absent for many weeks. Refreshed the nectar in all of them (I have 4 feeders) yesterday. Spotted a hummingbird going to the feeder above the distressed bluejay. Suddenly the bluejay sprung toward the feeder about 5 feet off the ground, flying to it, as if to grab the HB, then fell to the ground. I was trying to figure out if it had grabbed the hummingbird, decided probably not because HBs are super quick to fly away if threatened. Then I see another bluejay come and it appeared to try to feed the distressed BJ. Poked into its beak repeatedly. Now, I'd gotten my pellet gun, which always has a pellet in the chamber and pumped it up good (12 pumps, it's a single shot PG, gotta load a new pellet and pump it up between shots). I'd intended...
