The WWE 2K Series Still Has Plenty of Untapped Showcase Ideas
Sports are often at their best when the nervous tension is cranked to maximum levels, where every play feels like you’re about to live or die on its outcome. For a sport’s entertainment promotion so rich in history, showcases in the WWE 2K series have always been an obvious way to connect fans with that past in fun and interesting ways. Now that gamers have had some time with WWE 2K26 and its CM Punk showcase, we can begin looking ahead to future offerings and the many amazing wrestlers, events, and storylines yet to feature as showcase stars. Here are four of our favorite picks we’d love to see in the spotlight for future WWE 2K games.
Degeneration-X
As someone who was in Junior High School for the then-WWF’s Attitude Era, I am perhaps a bit biased toward the bad boys (and girl) of D-X. Even when you’re old enough to know that even the “bad boys” on the roster are just doing their job, it’s still hard not to be drawn to the crew coming out on the scene and telling the powers that be in the sport to get bent.
The Attitude Era is one of the most famous phases of professional wrestling, and one that was wildly successful for the promotion. Some of the biggest stars in the sport’s history made their names during that period, and a showcase commemorating it would be tremendously fun to play through.
There’s no more obvious avenue to go down with an Attitude-based showcase mode than focusing on D-X. They were pure entertainment and spectacle, with crowd-pleasing pyro and a chop that no doubt led to many a stern talking to from school officials. Throw in having massive stars with staying power, and one of the most consequential women’s wrestlers in history, Chyna, and you have the recipe for a can’t miss showcase mode in a future game.
The Many Faces Of Mick Foley
There are not many people in professional wrestling who appear to be more universally beloved than Mick Foley. In addition to being widely considered one of the nicer people in the industry, famous for donating his time to hospital visits and children’s organizations, Foley is also responsible for some of the most famous matches in the sport’s history.
A Foley showcase would allow 2K to show off the amazing matches from throughout Foley’s career, and would allow them to work with Foley’s matches as Mick Foley, as well as in his characters like Cactus Jack, Dude Love, and, most famously, Mankind.
Foley’s career highlights are not just a who’s who of the greatest and most popular wrestlers of his era, but also a what’s what of some of the most iconic match types and individual match performances. With so much to work with around a figure as popular as Foley, it feels like a gimme of an option for the 2K series to dive into.
Unfortunately, this may have to be a showcase for the future, given Foley’s announcement that he was not renewing his Legends contract. This could mean that in the immediate future, WWE 2K games may no longer include him on the roster, but a showcase event would also mark a fantastic way to announce his return should the day come.
Undertaker At Wrestlemania
A name that will pop up anytime you mention Foley and his greatest matches is that of The Undertaker, with the two having collaborated on one of professional wrestling’s all-timers in their Hell in the Cell clash, which included Taker unintentionally chokeslamming Foley through the cage. It’s an understatement to say that The Undertaker’s resume goes well beyond just a match that, on its own, would have been enough to leave a revered legacy.
Most famous of all is his winning streak at WrestleMania. By the time it finally came to an end at the hands of Brock Lesnar in 2014, The Undertaker had won 21 consecutive matches at WrestleMania, establishing one of the most historic runs in professional wrestling.
An Undertaker showcase mode, which plays into the streak, would be an excellent way to commemorate one of the sport’s greats and its showpiece event all at the same time. Over the course of the run, The Undertaker locked horns with and got the pin against many of the biggest names in wrestling from not just his own generation, but those that predated him and those whose careers ultimately carried on beyond his own. With so much history packed into one run, it would be a great way to journey through the sport.
Randy Orton
When fans talk about wrestlers who deserve their chance in the showcase spotlight, Randy Orton is never far from the conversation. One of the most impactful wrestlers of the turn of the millennium, Orton’s WWE career is now in its third decade, and is positively overflowing with moments begging to be made into featured bouts in a showcase.
A fun element of a potential Orton showcase would be following through the evolution of his career, arriving on the scene as someone famous for taking out the biggest names in the sport as a young gun, then staying around and relevant long enough to become the seasoned veteran with a big name for a young buck to challenge. An all-time heel, an Orton showcase would let fans revel in the fun of being the bad guy.
These are four showcase modes we would love to play through, but they’re just a fraction of the WWE’s collection of potential features. What would you like to see for the next WWE 2K showcase?
