The winter transfer window can make or break your session in Football Manager 26. It’s all about chaos and opportunity. With injuries piling up and players’ form dipping, this window is the last chance to fix problems before pushing for success.

But, unlike the summer transfer window, this window is rarely about rebuilding. You don’t go for big changes; it’s more about fixing existing problems and giving your team a much-needed boost for the second half of the season. But it is equally important as the summer transfer window, so here is how you can make impactful changes in this window.

Fix Problems, Don’t Rebuild

The Winter Transfer window is all about fixing problems. Look for inconsistencies within your roster — things like injured players, poor performers, or just a weak position you have been meaning to fill with a stronger player. You make short-term changes that strengthen your team instead of making massive replacements.

Generally, you should aim for 1-2 signings max; that’s enough to improve your roster. Occasionally, you can make up to three. The idea is that you’re targeting players you need right now. Signings like wonderkids or other long-term project pieces are best left until the summer.

For instance, let’s say your starting goalkeeper hasn’t been as reliable as they possibly should be when it comes to shot-stopping. The January window is the perfect time to see if there’s an upgrade available. Or maybe your star defensive midfielder is out for a few months with a serious injury — January is the perfect time to either sign a depth piece, or see if any of the bigger clubs have a midfielder you can loan in for half a season.

How To Look For Good Replacements In The Winter Transfer Window

There are a couple of strategies you can use individually or together to get the best players you are looking for. Firstly, identify what position and role you are hunting for. Then what you want to look for are the attributes, not the star ratings. If you click a player’s role in your Squad, FM will highlight the attributes that help that role. You can use that, and a bit of common sense, to figure out what attributes you should be looking for.

Because the winter window falls smack dab in the middle of a season, re-training players to play in a different position isn’t really efficient. So target players who have at least a “Competent” rating in the position you need, as well as the proper attributes to compete at whatever level you are at.

You can also use the new Transfer Room feature to get quality players. For those unfamiliar, it’s a new feature in FM26 that basically allows you to put in a request that you are looking for a certain player, and clubs all around the world will answer to your request if they have a player like that.

Just make sure to set up your request properly, and fill out the requirements you want, such as Age, Role (In and out of Possession), and Transfer types. Once that’s done, you will get a handful of good offers in a couple of days.

Use Loans Like A Weapon

If you are looking for a very short-term change or depth, loans are your best bet. They are quite overpowered in January if you use them right. Just make sure to negotiate correctly, and you can get solid deals.

Big teams usually want their youngsters or fringe players to get gametime, so they are usually willing to loan them out to clubs that can provide them the time they need. Look for the top clubs’ reserve or youth rosters; you can find really good players there. For short-term results, loans are much better than full transfers, and that’s pretty much what January is about.

Don’t Disrupt Momentum

One of the biggest mistakes you can make is signing players who are good on paper but don’t fit your tactic. You should prioritize your team’s chemistry over anything else. So, avoid huge star signings unless absolutely necessary, and only look for players who do not negatively affect your team’s balance. Use a mix of all the things mentioned in this guide, and just be patient.
