"textContent": "A Devotional for June 4, 2026 on John 1:19–20 John 1:19–20 says, “And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, ‘Who are you?’ He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, ‘I am not the Christ.’” John the Baptist had become a remarkable figure. Crowds gathered to hear him preach. People were being baptized, and excitement was spreading throughout the region. Many wondered if he might be the long-awaited Messiah. When religious leaders came to question him, John had an opportunity to elevate himself and enjoy the admiration of the people. Instead, he answered with humility and honesty: “I am not the Christ.” John understood his role. He was not the Savior; he was the witness pointing others to the Savior. His ministry was never about drawing attention to himself but about directing attention to Jesus. The greatness of John was found not in self-promotion but in self-denial. He knew that Christ must be exalted, even if he himself faded into the background. In a world that encourages self-promotion and recognition, John’s example challenges believers to examine their motives. Are we seeking to make much of ourselves, or are we seeking to make much of Christ? Every act of service, every word of testimony, and every opportunity to influence others should ultimately point people toward Jesus. The Christian life is not about becoming the center of attention. It is about faithfully bearing witness to the One who deserves all glory. Like John, we are called to speak clearly about who we are and who we are not. We are not the Savior. We are not the answer to the world’s deepest needs. Jesus alone is. Our privilege is to point others to Him. Today, ask God to give you the humility of John the Baptist—a heart that finds joy not in personal recognition but in helping others see Christ more clearly. Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for the example of John the Baptist. Help me walk in humility and faithfulness. Guard me from seeking my own glory, and teach me to point others to Jesus in all I do and say. May my life be a clear testimony to His greatness and grace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.",
