A Devotional for May 30 In Gospel of Luke 9:61, another man approaches Jesus with what seems like a reasonable request: “Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house.” At first glance, his words sound sincere. He is willing to follow Christ, but he still desires one final moment of attachment to the life he is leaving behind. Jesus responds in the next verse with solemn clarity, teaching that no one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God. This passage reminds us that following Christ requires a heart that is fully surrendered. The issue was not merely saying goodbye to family; the deeper issue was hesitation. The man wanted discipleship, but he also wanted to maintain control over the timing and conditions of his obedience. Jesus continually calls people beyond partial devotion into wholehearted allegiance. Many believers struggle with this same tension. We want Christ, yet we often cling to old securities, familiar comforts, past identities, or lingering distractions. We delay obedience while waiting for a more convenient season. Yet the kingdom of God moves forward through surrendered hearts that trust Him completely. Christ does not ask us to abandon love for others, but He does call us to place Him above every earthly attachment. The beauty of this passage is that Jesus calls imperfect people. The disciples themselves often struggled, failed, and misunderstood. Still, Christ patiently formed them into faithful followers. The call to wholehearted devotion is not a demand for instant perfection, but an invitation to trust Him enough to move forward without continually looking back. Today, consider whether there is anything keeping your heart divided. Is there an area where Christ is calling you to trust Him more fully? The Lord who calls you is also the Lord who sustains you. He is worthy of complete devotion because His grace is sufficient for every step of obedience. Prayer: Lord Jesus, forgive me for the times my heart is divided and hesitant. Teach me to follow You with sincerity, courage, and trust. Help me not to cling to the things behind me, but to walk faithfully in the path You have set before me. Strengthen my heart to obey You fully, and let my life reflect wholehearted devotion to Your kingdom. Amen.
