His contact with Western art led him away from socialist realism towards abstract modernism, despite being branded a “formalist” during a 1963-64 crackdown on non-conformist art. Until 10 May 2026, the Latvian National Museum of Art is showing a retrospective titled Ojārs Ābols. Cilvēka absurdie projekti uz Zemes / Ojārs Ābols. Man’s Absurd Projects on Earth.\n\nFor titles, the design uses **Handel Gothic** , a geometric typeface of the same era, to evoke both the period and the Modernist aesthetic that defined the artist's output. Text is set in **Mulish**.\n\n\n\n\n_Ian Hooker. License: All Rights Reserved. _\n\n\n_Ian Hooker. License: All Rights Reserved. _\n\n\n_Ian Hooker. License: All Rights Reserved. _\n\n\n_Ian Hooker.
