"textContent": "Iâm catching up on my reading pile, and am half way through David Edwardsâ excellent _A Short Book About EgoâŠ_ (what comes after the ellipsis is _âand the remedy of meditationâ_ , which I find to be a _touch_ prescriptive, but the book contains too many sparkling gems to hold any real acrimony towards the proffered âone solutionâ).\n\nI was delighted this morning to learn that he shares a love of _The The_ , especially the track I unpicked earlier this year: _True Happiness This Way Lies_ â he too examines its lyrics in the book, and even met the artist Matt Johnson, to quiz him about it once! đČ\n\nAnyway I havenât reached the end yet, so I suspect thereâll be more along these lines, but Iâm delighted to see that he tackles the _âAndâŠ?â_ objection that sometimes arises when we talk of spiritual awakening; of seeing life with clarity.\n\n * _âSo what? What difference does that make?â_\n * _âHowâs that going to pay my bills?â_\n * _âSo youâre telling me I have to sit in the dark, meditating all the time, to feel better?â_\n\n\n\nAhh, minds. Fighting their corner. All power to âem! âđ»\n\nThereâs a little bit of the text, after he talks about seeing through the blather of ârighteous egosâ and âsuffering egosâ where the rubber meets the road, and he offers something beyond just âfeeling betterâ:\n\n> _âAnd then the irony â the result of this much-derided ânavel-gazingâ, this inactivist pause in our compulsive activism â is that positive pragmatic actions become much more possible ⊠It means weâre freed from pain and ego to respond positively; to talk, take action, to leave, and so on. And to take action out of love and bliss, rather than misery, is an extraordinary thing.â_\n\nThe mind doesnât like hearing this, because the mindâs currency is misery. Itâs hard coded to see the âwrongâ (by which I mean it _creates_ it, really), so that it can then offer its solutions⊠and woe betide us if we ignore its advice!\n\nBut once weâve seen _through_ all thatâthe much vaunted âspiritual awakeningâ, which is no more complicated than getting wise to the mindâs BSâit leaves us _way_ more resourceful; less consumed by hatred and despair; more able to see whatâs important; much more likely to find effective ways to respond to everydayâand extraordinaryâsituations.\n\n(This is why this understanding is just as important in the world of work, productivity & creativity, as it is in more therapeutic applications.)\n\nYou _know_ all this, because youâve experienced it! As I say, in one chapter of my own, forthcoming, book,\n\n> _âYou know very well that youâre at your best when calm and clear-headed, whereas your worst tendencies stem from anxious, insecure thinking.â_\n\nSo if you ever catch your mind raising objections to slowing down, or calming down, or it starts bleating on about apathy and inactivity, just rememberâfrom your own experienceâhow much more effective you are in life, when youâre coming from a place of love.\n\nđ\n\nGiles\n\n### Related\n\nPutting up with thingsA disclaimer about the nature of acceptance đ©The Daily RemindersGiles P Croft\n\nNone of this means you should just âput up with thingsâ",
