Human Rights Council divided as U.N. warns of atrocities in Sudan

GENEVA (AN) — Divisions emerged at the Human Rights Council as U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk warned that a new human rights catastrophe may be unfolding in Sudan's North Kordofan state.
During an emergency debate on Friday requested by European countries, Council members disagreed over how the international community should respond to escalating violence in and around el-Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan, where fighting between the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) has intensified.
