I was on my way home when he got on skis in hand. He carried the rocking chair through the doors like it was a bag of groceries. Put it down, sat in it, crossed his legs and leaned back. His pair of Fischer skis rested against the seat to his left almost fell. The woman had to save them. Nobody said anything. The tram kept going.

I still don’t know the order of events. Did he buy the rocking chair on his way home from Marka? Or was he heading to the ski trails and picked up a chair along the way? Either version makes perfect sense if you’ve lived in Norway long enough.

Oslo is Norway’s largest city, and the forest surrounds it on all sides. Wherever you are in the city, Oslomarka is never more than a short trip or a thought away. People sit at their desks in winter, dreaming about «lysløypa»: the floodlit tracks of ski trails.

When the weekend comes, they go. Apparently some of them bring furniture.

I once tried shooting an entire year in black and white. It didn’t last. In February 2026, I tried again, this time limiting myself to just one month. This is one of the images from that challenge.
