A fable for our times (with apologies to Shel Silverstein)

Once there was a guardrail …
and it
looked after
a
little boy.
And every day
the boy
would come
and
he
would
kick
its
beams
and scream at it
and curse at it
and tell the rail
that he would own it one day.
And the guardrail,
having guarded the boy
and protected the world from the boy,
was happy.
But time went by.
One day the boy came to the guardrail.
And the rail said, “Come, Boy, kick me again
and I shall stand strong against you
and remind you of what is right and what is good.”
“I am too big to have guardrails,” said the boy. READ ON
