One layer above Alters the known forever Unchanging below

Isn't it strange that paint seems like a permanent alteration, and but it doesn't truly modify the object that it's applied to? Sure, the visual perception of that object is changed, but the object below is the same besides the addition of an encompassing layer.

This leads me to some cursed questions:
