Madden NFL 27 Hands-Off Preview
At the end of the day, you’re probably reading this because you want to know how Madden NFL 27 is different from Madden NFL 26. It’s a fair question and one I tend to think through for a long time before writing about the new game for the year.
We were included in a preview meeting for Madden NFL 27 as well as College Football 27 to see what is new and what we can expect from this year’s iteration of the games. There are a lot of things on my personal wishlist that were crossed off on Madden NFL 27 from 26. Let’s go through some of the highlights!
First of all, I’d like to commend the team at EA Sports for always trying to put the player’s desires first. You can tell by their list of updates that they heard a lot from the community and tried to get as much done as possible for Madden NFL 27. Their passion for this game is a big reason why the franchise has turned around from the… dark times.
Gameplay
Both Madden NFL 27 and College Football 27 have seen a major shift in gameplay, ensuring that what is in one game, probably is in the other. Wear and Tear was a much desired addition in Madden NFL 26 and was fabulous to start adding into Madden from College Football.
On that trend, for M27 we’ll be getting updated coverages, trench play, AI abilities, player abilities, home field advantage, and more. Their goal is balanced gameplay between Offense and Defense with home field advantage and dynamic weather impacting the game top to bottom.
For coverage updates, the new “look for work” mechanic will lead the CPU to actively look for ways to assist in defense instead of standing there and rigidly following the assigned area. You’ll have your linebackers following those scrambling QB’s a bit tighter and more realistic.
We’ll also be seeing new Redzone behaviour allowing for a more realistic presence in the red zone for receivers and OL play. Along with that is a brand new QB sneak meter which will make the Tush Push and other sneaks a bit more of a challenge than the Tush Push seems on TV.
The abilities have also been updated allowing for a model closer to CFB and allowing for you to stack abilities on a player as they continue to gain experience. This will make players like Myles Garrett and Micah Parsons stand out from the crowd even more than they already do year to year. I’m always a fan when the team at EA adds more control to team building. This is an addition I’m excited to play around with at launch.
We also have confirmation that the game will run at 60FPS on the Nintendo Switch 2, 100+ FPS on the PlayStation Pro, and will be available on PC.
Franchise Mode
This is my bread and butter and where I spend the majority of my time in the Madden franchise. This year, we’ll be getting a long list of updates I cannot wait to start trying out.
Their brand new system, The Persona Engine, is set to completely rework how Franchise works. Everyone is human and has a human mindset. That seems dramatic, right? Based on the information we have, this seems like it’ll take the rigidness out of the team building aspects of Franchise Mode. Players will “think for themselves” based on their level and overall statistics, the actual player personalities, and more. This engine allows things to change from week to week.
You’ll be negotiating contracts with interactive contract negotiations. For example, we saw Gibbs texting with Coach Campbell about how the rumor of negotiations not going well negatively impacted his feelings on contract negotiations. This addition, as well as not having EVERY player wanting a new contract Week 3, will add a lot of “life” to the mode.
Alongside the active negotiation changes, we will have access to:
- Guaranteed Contracts
- Void Years
- Incentives
- No trade clauses
- Longer Street FA deals
- Contract Holdouts
- Trade Demands
- RFA’s
- Franchise Tags
- Transition Tags
- UDFA’s
- And more
We’re also getting a MUCH needed update to Offseason Free Agency with what they’re calling, “Free Agent Frenzy.” While we’ve not played it yet, from the screenshots we saw it looks like just what we needed to get that area feeling more realistic.
Superstar
Some of the major highlights for Superstar Mode were the multiple aspects it’ll take for your Superstar to make the Hall of Fame. It’ll be fun to fully dig into what that means and how it impacts the longevity of the mode!
The Superstar powers are a new addition that remind me if you had the QB cone from Madden 08 only the way you wanted it to be. The example we saw was almost a Spidey-Sense called the Pressure Detector System. This ability allowed for you to see a red outline of areas where pressure was coming down on you.
Spectacle and more
One of my favorite announcements of the entire event was the addition of real-life coordinators being added to the game. Brian Flores, Steve Spagnuolo, Mike McDaniel, Dennis Allen, and will be great additions to Franchise Mode and lead to some real-world possibilities of those coordinators getting a HC job in the next cycle. This is something I have been asking for every year for a long time, so this being in the game will be a lot of fun. We also know you’ll have the choice for them to be in the booth (which is a new area) or on the field with your character.
We will be getting new stadium updates like the Bills brand new stadium, as well as updates to the stadiums currently in game. We’ll also get more themed events based on the uniforms such as the field, mascot, and more impacted by the Tampa Bay uniform choices.
Halftime is back with Scott Hanson with him also providing commentary for Player of the Week and the games of the week. Scott being a part of Madden was a huge boost to the realism of the game as so many NFL fans watch Redzone as the basis of their NFL viewing experience. Having him back and added to even more is a more than welcome addition.
The dynamic weather is sure to be a treat to experience as we will be getting progressive snow and rain which will impact not only the on-the-field plays but the jerseys and more. I can’t wait to see the snow start slow and build steam in a playoff game or in a northern team’s stadium. There will also be dynamic lighting for areas other than the East Coast which the team acknowledged there was a bias. The example we heard about was the Broncos stadium and that blue-pink of the afternoon/early evening lighting.
Broadcast packages were amazing last year giving us TNF, SNF, and MNF. Now, we will have all of the stadiums for the games abroad with their own looks and lighting for times of day. I was also so excited to see the addition of Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas broadcast packages. Halloween looks and sounds like so much fun!
Overall
As a fan of Franchise Mode, I am very happy about the upcoming additions for Madden NFL 27. If everything they announced comes out swinging, this could be another layer of trust built between the Madden fans and the players. Each year, they’ve been up front as to the concept of long term plans. Three years ago, when I first visited the EA team, Connor Dugan told me the team had plans on plans, they just needed the time to get them done. After five years of covering Madden for GamingTrend, I have seen a steady incline in trajectory leading to a massive amount of updates this year specifically. We’ll see how the game plays, but as of right now, this is a very happy Madden fan.
