"textContent": "Miles Morales has returned from his adventure in the reborn Ultimate Universe, bringing with him the Origin Boxes, powerful artifacts that can bestow powers upon those who receive them. Previously used in the Maker’s corrupted version of the Ultimate Universe to transform familiar faces such as Peter Parker into the heroes they were meant to be, the objects have been brought to the main Marvel universe for safekeeping. But power such as theirs is bound to attract those seeking to abuse them, and there’s no telling how they’ll affect the mainline universe.\n\n*Mild spoilers ahead for Ultimate Impact: Reborn #1*\n\nWar rages through the Negative Zone. Led by the powerful Hostilicus the Devastator, the forces of Annihilus fight a bloody conflict against the forces of Blastaar’s Children. A conflict that is nearing its end, as the Cult of Annihilus draws ever closer to victory, thanks in no small part to Hostilicus’s might.\n\nBut let’s leave that brutal conflict for a time to focus on a more familiar place: New York. Miles Morales is awoken by the incessant beeping of his phone to find he’s missed five calls from Tony Stark. Jumping to his feet, he quickly dons his costume and sets off across the city, the Origin Boxes he brought back from the Ultimate Universe safely secured in a web sack on his back. Of course, being New York, it’s only a matter of time before Miles finds himself attacked by a supervillain. Namely, the Spot. Except, not the Spot we know, but rather one from another universe who’s been hired by an unnamed employer to steal the Origin Boxes. Which, of course, Miles cannot allow to happen. Cue epic battle.\n\nAs they fight through the streets of Brooklyn, the story cuts away to various other characters. Seemingly ordinary people simply going about their lives, oblivious to the battle raging elsewhere. We see a parent tending to his kid before going to work; teenagers enjoying the sunrise in the park; and employees at a struggling news outlet rolling over for a rich individual asking them to bury a story to protect their interests. Each of these ordinary people are given a fair bit of time in the spotlight as the story shifts between them and Miles’s desperate battle against the alternate universe Spot. Why? You’ll have to read the issue to find out, but safe to say they’ll play a big role in the days to come.\n\nThe same will certainly hold true for Hostilicus and the Cult of Annihilus as well, though in their case the role they will play is less clear. For the moment, their conflict appears constrained to the Negative Zone, completely detached from the events playing out in the rest of the issue. How long that will remain the case, however, is the big question of the issue. Certainly they will play a part, as otherwise Christopher Condon wouldn’t have taken the time to show us their conflict, though in what capacity only time will tell.\n\nBefore I give my thoughts on the story presented here, I feel it only fair to admit that I have not really kept up with the events of the various Marvel Ultimates titles, nor have I read Miles’ recent adventure into the Ultimate Universe. Consequently, I am admittedly largely ignorant of the events that led up to this issue, save for what I’ve gleaned through various readings about them online or from discussions with others who have kept up with those stories.\n\nHaving said that, I must say that I found this story surprisingly easy to dive into. Yes, I’m certain there were things of significance that I missed, but Condon does such a good job of explaining things in an unobtrusive manner that keeps you immersed into the story that I didn’t feel anywhere near as lost as I should have been. Granted, already knowing the two main characters probably helped in this regard, but there were plenty of things I was utterly ignorant of that I was able to understand simply through what was presented on the pages of the issue.\n\nMoreover, the way the story is laid out makes it feel less like just another chapter of a much larger story and more like the beginning of something new. The only real connection to the events that led up to it are (to my knowledge) the Origin Boxes. That could change in future issues, of course, but for the sake of this issue all we really need to know is what they are and how Miles got them. Both of which we’re told almost immediately, leaving the story open to tell its own tale rather than leaving readers feeling like they were dropped into the middle of another.\n\nSo how is the story being told here?\n\nHonestly, it’s a strong start to what promises to be a compelling storyline. The fight between Miles and Spot provides an excellent framework for the story, giving us an exciting battle that showcases Miles’ current abilities well while highlighting the danger associated with the Origin Boxes in an organic manner. You can feel the desperation in Miles, not because of who he’s facing, but because of what happens if he loses the Boxes.\n\nThe side characters shown throughout the issue are given enough of the spotlight to give readers a good insight into who they are without giving away too much. By interweaving them into the battle scenes, it also gives them a sense of importance that comes to fruition in the final pages, promising big things for the next issue.\n\nLikewise, choosing to begin and end the issue with the conflict in the Negative Zone provides an excellent cliffhanger, hinting at the impending threat while holding back enough to stir readers’ curiosity about what’s coming. Is Hostilicus the unknown figure who hired the Spot to steal the Origin Boxes? Or is there a great force at play?\n\nAll that’s for certain is that whatever may come, the Ultimate universe is about to affect the mainline one in big, unpredictable ways.\n\nUltimate Impact: Reborn (2026) #1 is available now from Marvel Comics.\n\n\n Review Guidelines\n \n\n80\n\n### Ultimate Impact: Reborn (2026) #1\n\n#### Great\n\nSpinning off from Marvel’s Ultimate Universe, Ultimate Impact: Reborn (2026) #1 shows the beginning of the fallout of Miles’ time in that dimension. Though ultimately being a new chapter in a much bigger story, writer Christopher Condon presents a story that reads as the beginning of its own thing rather than just a continuation of a larger whole, allowing even readers who haven’t read the Ultimate titles to pick up and enjoy it.\n\n* * *\n\n##### Pros\n\n * Story can be followed even if previous titles haven’t been read\n * Layout of the story effectively builds tension organically\n\n\n\n##### Cons\n\n * Significance of some things may be missed if unfamiliar of prior events\n\n\n\n* * *\n\nThis review is based on a retail copy provided by the publisher.",
