"textContent": "For the first time, Humanitarian Data Exchange (HDX), a widely used platform for sharing humanitarian data, is releasing disaster-specific OSM datasets. This has allowed OSM data to be downloaded over 440 times in response to recent disasters in Madagascar and Mozambique including within the disaster affected countries themselves.\n\nThis initiative kicked off in early 2026 and has already resulted in two regularly updated and focused HDX-OSM datasets:\n\n * Mozambique Floods, January 2026\n * Madagascar, Tropical Cyclone Gezani, February 2026\n\n_An example above: HDX page containing OSM data for Mozambique Floods in 2026_\n\nAlthough the same data is directly accessible on OSM, being on HDX ensures:\n\n * It is highly **accessible** : site visitors can download all relevant spatial data in a single click, no expertise is needed and the complexities of an Overpass query or QGIS plugin are avoided\n * It is **up-to-date** : disaster responses result in rapid generation of OSM data, to match this HDX's disaster specific datasets are regularly updated, up to every two/three days during the early stages of a disaster\n * It is **location specific** : HOT works with HDX to ensure that the OSM data for a disaster is focused on the disaster-affected area, including, but not limited to, all areas of active mapping (i.e. the HOT Tasking Manager project extents)\n\n\n\nHDX has agreed to continue supporting this initiative, so look out for similar datasets for future disasters. If you are involved in coordinating the generation of OSM data in response to a disaster and want to increase the reach of the data, please feel free to reach out directly to me on OSM or email: sam.colchester@hotosm.org. To help set things up, ideally the following should be shared with me within a week of a disaster occurring:\n\n * Contiguous area of interest (GeoJSON) defining the extent of the OSM data that will be available on HDX. This can also be understood as 'the disaster affected area'. It should contain all HOT Tasking Manager project extents but should also include other areas that you understand will be useful to responding organizations\n * Links to all HOT Tasking Manager projects that are part of the response\n * Description of the disaster including mapping needs, any response organizations and partner involvement\n * By default OSM highways (roads) and buildings will be available in the dataset, but if additional features are needed they can be requested\n\n\n\nFor more detailed information see the HOT-HDX Disaster Data Wiki page.",
