Estimating is an endless debate

Symptoms vs problem
The problem is not the estimates, it's about the unknowns.

We do estimation because we desire control and certainty about time, cost and schedule. That much that we ask for estimation about how much time it'll take to do the estimation: the sunk cost fallacy - the tendency to follow through on something that we've already invested heavily in even when giving up is clearly a better idea.
On time and on budget
Is it a good thing to see progress? Is this a good measure of the results of our decision?
