"textContent": "\n\n\n\nAre you planning on taking the whole family to see the new Christopher Nolan epic? Well, think again.\n\nWe still have no official word out of the MPAA about _The Odyssey_ or its rating, but the movie’s page on the TCL Chinese Theatres website says that _The Odyssey_ is Rated R.\n\nIf true, this would be a shocking revelation for an historical epic that was shot on IMAX cameras and so costly to make.\n\nLet's dive in.\n\n* * *\n\n## What Is The Odyssey Rated?\n\nAgain, we have no official word from the MPAA, but seeing TCL put this on their site feels like a leak to me. We're not seeing it on any of the posters, and by the time I publish this, I hope it's not pulled back, but this has a big effect on the potential box office of the movie.\n\nThe Odyssey Credit: Universal\n\nNow, I know _Oppenheimer_ was rated R and still managed to make almost a billion at the box office, but _The Odyssey_ has a chance to do even more. Part of me suspected that Universal would only greenlight such an expensive movie if they thought it had the chance to take in all audiences.\n\nBut I also respect them for letting a filmmaker like Nolan cook and make the movie he wants in the scope and spectacle it deserves.\n\nIf you've read the Odyssey, you know that there are lots of epic battles, so the estimation would be that the movie is so violent that it received its R-rating. But there's also some sexuality in the book that maybe translates as well.\n\n## The Box Office Ramifications\n\nIt's hard to estimate the box office while only seeing trailers and having a ticket-booking link to confirm it. But I think an R-rating would definitely cap the film's earning potential.\n\nWhile I still think it could surpass _The Passion of the Christ_ as the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time, I don't see it legging out to a billion unless other countries rate it lower and it can expand there.\n\nIf the site said PG-13, a cool billion was my original prediction.\n\nThis will probably be the most fascinating case study of the summer.\n\n## Summing It All Up\n\nExcitement for this movie is at an all-time high, and the closer we get, the more people are trying to learn about the film. It's kind of wild we dont know its rating yet, so we'll keep a close eye on that.\n\nEspecially as tickets go on sale this week.\n\nAre you excited to see the movie?\n\nLet us know what you think in the comments.",
