Movies are built on the back of charismatic actors who make scenes pop, and who welcome the audience into a world they believe.

And Donald Gibb was one of the best.

You might not always remember his name, but the second that 6'4" frame and iconic underbite appeared on screen, you knew you were in for some fun.

Here is a ranked look at the best Donald Gibb movie moments that define his career.

Let's dive in.

5. The "Dim Mak" Reaction (Bloodsport , 1988)

This is a highly underrated movie that's oh so fun. While Jean-Claude Van Damme is the star, the movie doesn't work without Gibb as Ray Jackson, the braggadocious fighter whom you sort of love.

In this scene, he is there to purely support, but his reactions are kind of perfect stand-ins for the audience and to help build the mythos of the protagonist.

4. The Transformation (Revenge of the Nerds II: Nerds in Paradise , 1987)

In the sequel, Ogre undergoes a surprising bit of character development. When he eventually abandons the Alpha Betas to join the nerds, it’s a weirdly heartwarming moment where Gibb subverts tropes he's lived on for his career into something funny.

3. Jackson vs. Chong Li (Bloodsport , 1988)

Gibb brings a raw, American brawler energy to the Kumite that contrasts perfectly with the disciplined martial arts of the other fighters. As I said earlier, you love him and his brute force, even if he's there to kind of teach the fighters a lesson about who can fall in this ring. His fight against Chong Li is a brutal lesson in hubris.

2. The Bridge Guard (Conan the Barbarian , 1982)

I couldn't find a clip of this, but it's Gibb’s film debut. He plays the bridge guard and immediately showcases his pure physical presence. It’s a small role, but it established the template for his career and got him seen.

1. "NERDS!" (Revenge of the Nerds , 1984)

Is there a more iconic one-word line in '80s comedy? As Fred "Ogre" Palowakski, Gibb is every bully ever manifested in one pure presence of meansness and fear. The way he bellows "NERDS!" from the balcony of the Alpha Beta house is a masterclass in vocal performance and physical comedy.

Summing It All Up

Gibb was a great character actor and the kind of presence Hollywood needs to support its stars and to showcase roles on screen that take a real behemoth to embody them.

It's sad to lose him young, so celebrate him by watching one of these classics today and remember the guy who could be both hilarious and absolutely intimidating.
