With Its Recent Boris FX Acquisition, Could Vegas Pro 2026 Actually Challenge Premiere and Resolve?
Announced about a month ago, Boris FX announced it was acquiring Vegas Pro (formerly Sony Vegas), Sound Forge, and Acid Pro from its previous parent company, MAGIX Software GmbH.
The acquisition was a significant move for the VFX developer, giving the company a pathway into the NLE market. It might not be a clear-cut path towards major success; however, it’s an intriguing one that could likely benefit video editors looking for more diversification and options in this space.
Here’s what you need to know about this Boris FX acquisition of Vegas Pro and what to expect from Vegas Pro 2026, plus other updates for audio and music for video.
Boris FX Acquires Vegas Pro, Sound Forge, and Acid Pro
Announced on Boris FX’s website, the acquisition of these three brands by Boris FX from MAGIX Software GmbH represents an interesting move that aims to bring new AI technology to the VFX company, along with notable legacy video editing and audio products.
“We’re thrilled to add Vegas Pro (formerly Sony Vegas), Sound Forge, and Acid Pro to our product family. We look forward to advancing all three with more power behind them. Boris FX has never been a single-host plugin company, and this acquisition strengthens that commitment. We will continue supporting every major platform and host application as we always have, while our combined engineering teams accelerate innovation by bringing shared AI technology across our entire product line.” - Boris Yamnitsky, President and Founder of Boris FX.
The goal seems not only to cement Boris FX as a major player in the video space but also to expand into new areas of the budding content creation sphere, given the company's diverse range of technologies.
The New Vegas Pro 2026
The big news from the acquisition, and the best sign that this will be a positive acquisition in terms of keeping the NLE going and the community strong, is that Boris FX is pushing out a 2026 version with a ton of new features across its lineup of editions, which now include Vegas Pro, Vegas Pro Plus, and Vegas Pro Ultimate.
“Vegas Pro 2026 focuses on bringing in the tools and add-ons our users have been asking for, opening up new workflow and creative possibilities with greater stability. As a team of enthusiasts, we see Vegas Pro as a perfect match for the Boris FX portfolio. It’s exciting to combine award-winning plugins with our own NLE and really unlock its full potential as we work toward deeper, more seamless integration between Vegas Pro and Boris FX plugins and products.” - Florian Liepold, Boris FX Vegas Pro product owner.
As you might expect, too, Vegas Pro 2026 is getting some new editing workflows which will aim to be speedier and more intuitive, thanks to some new 2D/3D titling options, support for NVIDIA Blackwell GPUs, a newly updated AI model which will support AI-driven transcription and voice generation tools, along with added support for the ProRes RAW format.
Audio and Music Updates
Along with the new Vegas Pro, Boris FX has announced that Sound Forge and Acid Pro have joined the company's Pro Audio division, alongside other products such as Sequoia, Samplitude, CrumplePop, and Music Studio.
Sound Forge will remain a solid tool for audio recording, editing, sound design, and mastering, with its easy-to-use workflows allowing deep customization and recording up to 32 channels at once.
The loop-based music software Acid Pro will also continue to offer a large collection of royalty-free loops, automatic pitch and tempo matching, live preview, multitrack recording, editing, and mixing tools and features, which can be used with its timeline arranger.
