Video Assist iPad App Adds More Masks, Record Trigger for New Cameras, and More Updates
If you’re someone who has turned your iPad into a monitor in the past, or are intrigued by this mind-blowing new option, then you might want to check out the Video Assist iPad app, which has been boosted with its latest update.
Already an easy option for those looking to capture videos or frame grabs from any HDMI or SDI video source, this new update is set to add support for multiple masks, new record-trigger-compatible cameras, and metadata extraction for RED and Sony Venice cameras.
Here’s what you need to know.
Video Assist iPad App Update
As mentioned above, the Video Assist app has been a popular option for those looking to use their iPads as external monitors and recording devices. Already equipped with pro tools that you might expect, like LUTs, Compositing, Focus Peaking, False Color, Zebras, Video Transform, Grid Lines, Center Marks, Aspect Ratio Masks, Anamorphic Desqueeze, and Audio Meters, this new update adds a few notable improvements.
The big news is that the Mask Effect now supports three separate masks, which can be helpful for those looking to easily display multiple frame lines simultaneously. The Record Trigger can now be used with the Canon C50 and Canon C400, and all video output display modes will be supported.
The other notable update here is that Video Assist will now support metadata extraction for RED and Sony Venice cameras, covering info such as Clip Name, Frame Rate, Lens, Iris, ND Filter, Exposure Index, Shutter, White Balance, Color Correction, and Timecode Start/End.
Complete List of What’s New
Here’s everything new with the latest update for the Video Assist app:

- Match Camera File Name for RED and Sony Venice! The camera file name can be detected with Metadata Extraction and used for clips recorded in Video Assist.
- Projects will display their Total File Size in the Project View. This makes it easy to identify projects that are taking up a lot of space on your iPad.
- Mask Aspect Ratios can now be quickly selected via the context menu. Tap and Hold on ‘Aspect Ratio’ when using the Mask Effect to select from common aspect ratios.
