The Eastman Kodak Company has announced that it is introducing a new color negative motion picture film stock that was developed in collaboration with writer, director, and producer Sam Levinson and cinematographer Marcell Rév, HCA, ASC, to help them achieve a distinct visual aesthetic for the third season of the acclaimed HBO series Euphoria.

Set to be available in 16mm, 35mm, and 65mm formats, this new Kodak VERITA 200D 5206/7206 aims to deliver detailed highlights, high color saturation, deep blacks, and warm, natural skin tones.

Let’s take a look at this new film stock, its Euphoria -inspired aesthetic, and how it could be an intriguing option for other non-teen drama projects.

KODAK VERITA 200D Color Negative Film

Well, thanks, Euphoria , for bringing us an exciting new color-negative motion-picture film stock. Regardless of its origins, this new KODAK VERITA 200D looks quite promising. Kodak shares that, compared with the company’s VISION3 color negative films, this new film stock will feature a shorter yet exceptionally richer dynamic range, helping cinematographers achieve a more classical cinematic look.

"In addition to recent advancements to VISION3 with a new anti‑halation undercoat film structure, the commercialization of VERITA 200D underscores Kodak's continued commitment to providing filmmakers with a variety of the highest‑quality creative tools possible." — Vanessa Bendetti, Vice President and Head of Motion Picture at Kodak.

According to Kodak’s press release, the film has also been selectively trade-tested by cinematographers worldwide for several years, so it should be fully ready for a full release and wide appeal.

Developed in Collaboration with the 'Euphoria' Team

What’s most unique about this new film, though, is, of course, its collaborators. Developed in “close collaboration” with Sam Levison and DP Marcell Rév, VERITA 200D was commercialized in motion picture format specifically to achieve a distinct visual aesthetic for the third season of HBO's original teen drama series Euphoria.

Kodak further shares that, with Levinson and Rév, the duo was exposed to more than 1 million feet of VERITA 200D in 35mm and 65mm formats during the production of Euphoria Season 3, which was shot entirely on Kodak film.

Ephoria, for its cinematography, was the first television production to shoot significant volumes of large‑format 65mm film. Outside of its Euphoria use, Kodak also notes that many other projects have now used VERITA 200D in advance of its formal release, including A24's upcoming The Death of Robin Hood.
