Well, this is embarrassing. After putting $1 billion into OpenAI on the bet that its AI video model Sora would be the future of content, Disney’s investment is now dead. OpenAI made the surprise announcement yesterday that it was shutting down its AI video model and platform.

While we didn’t get official reasons for the shutdown, reports confirm that Disney’s $1 billion investment in OpenAI and Sora is now dead.

However, many questions remain. Namely, how did Disney get this so wrong? And, more importantly, what will Disney (and other entertainment giants) re-up with other AI companies, or look back towards more traditional content models?

Disney’s Sora Investment is Dead

According to reports, Disney’s $1 billion deal with OpenAI is dead. Here’s a statement from Disney (via The Hollywood Reporter):

“As the nascent AI field advances rapidly, we respect OpenAI’s decision to exit the video generation business and to shift its priorities elsewhere. We appreciate the constructive collaboration between our teams and what we learned from it, and we will continue to engage with AI platforms to find new ways to meet fans where they are while responsibly embracing new technologies that respect IP and the rights of creators.”

From the statement, we can see the answer to one of the main questions many might have right now, as the company sounds like it’s still open to working with other AI platforms. However, the deal with OpenAI and Sora was quite unique and likely more difficult to pull off with some of the major players, such as the Chinese-based ByteDance, which has its Seedance 2.0 model.

The AI Wars Heat Up

For those firmly in the anti-AI camp who are looking to celebrate hits against the tech giants pushing AI, it might be easy to chalk this up as a win for traditional content creation. Yet, while it’s certainly a setback for generative AI video, there’s likely a lot more going on here than what we’re seeing on the surface.

OpenAI still hasn’t given an official reason for why it is shuttering Sora, but it’s hard not to see it as a response to ByteDance’s aforementioned Seedance 2.0 video model, which, after facing a temporary pause, appears to be back in action.

Does ByteDance have the resources to become the top AI video model at this point? Can it handle the lawsuits it is facing from the major entertainment giants? Will Disney look to make a new deal or wait until the next model arrives?

There’s likely still a lot to be said, but make no mistake. This AI video revolution is getting pretty messy.
