Sony to Shut Down Award-Winning VFX Studio Behind ‘Game of Thrones’ and ‘The Boys’
Well, this one is going to hurt. According to reports online, Pixomondo, the Academy and Emmy award-winning international visual effects and virtual production company, is set to shut down.
Acquired by Sony in 2022, Pixomondo has studios worldwide and has been one of the major players in the high-end VFX space for tentpole films and shows like Game of Thrones , Halo , and The Boys , to name a few.
Here’s what we know about this shuttering and what it could mean for the VFX industry as a whole.
Pixomondo to Shut Down
According to reports online, members of Pixomondo's management have confirmed that hundreds of employees will be affected. And while wild speculation will likely follow, it does sound like the initial reasons given mostly center on Sony Pictures Entertainment consolidating its VFX work under its Sony Pictures Imageworks unit.
Still, this is no small news, as regardless of the final count, a huge number of people and the broader legacy will likely be affected by this shuttering. Founded in 2001 by Thilo Kuther, Pixomondo (PXO) has grown into a global VFX powerhouse, having worked on major projects and received numerous awards and accolades over the years.
The Future of VFX
While the reasons for the shutdown do seem to make sense, on paper at least, it’s still a blow for VFX and virtual production in general, as the industry (like many similar and overlapping avenues in the greater film and content world) is facing some daunting questions.
The looming AI revolution is undoubtedly on everyone’s minds, and despite the recent success of other Sony Pictures Imageworks projects like Into the Spider-Verse and KPop Demon Hunters , it’s likely an underlying reason for consolidation as companies, employees, and artists alike brace for the changes coming on the horizon.
