RIP to a Legendary DSLR: The Canon 5D Mark IV Has Officially Been Discontinued
Well, this isn’t a surprise, but it’s heartbreaking nonetheless. Canon has reportedly officially ended the Canon 5D line as it has discontinued the Mark IV version of the camera.
Perhaps the most important digital camera of all time—or certainly the most influential for up-and-coming filmmakers, brand-building video professionals, and hybrid photographers and videographers—the Canon 5D was more than a camera—it was a movement.
We’ll undoubtedly have more to say on this news once it’s had a moment to set in, but for now, let’s look back at the legacy of the Canon 5D. And, thankfully, if you’re getting intrigued by this famous DSLR, you’re not out of luck just yet, as models are still available online.
RIP to the Canon 5D Mark IV
The original Canon 5D was released all the way back in October of 2005, and while it was a game-changer for DSLR technology, the movement really began with the Mark II in 2008. A camera that, for many of us personally, was the greatest thing ever invented, thanks to its full HD video recording quality, durability, and—eventually—hackability to be able to record 4K video well before anything else similar on the market.
By the time the Canon 5D Mark IV was announced in 2016, though, the writing was on the wall for mirrorless technology to replace the DSLR, which it eventually did when Canon introduced the R line in 2018 and moved in that direction soon after.
Still, the 5D Mark IV was no slouch and even today is quite solid thanks to a 30.4MP full-frame CMOS sensor and DIGIC 6+ image processor. Still, even with 4K capabilities and better low-light sensitivity than previous models, it never really had a chance against its mirrorless competition, which came in droves over the next few years.
