10 Best Los Angeles Movies
With Hollywood centered in Los Angeles, it's no wonder we have so many great movies shot in and around LA.
But over the decades, what were the best movies to feature the city? Which movies captured the heart, soul, history, and enormity that is Los Angeles?
I decided to pick ten titles that I think did it best.
These are titles about Los Angeles...not just Hollywood. They should embody the city and its soul.
Let's dive in.
1. Chinatown (1974)
- Director: Roman Polanski
- Writer: Robert Towne
- Cast: Jack Nicholson, Faye Dunaway, John Huston
A movie that functions like an "L.A. origin story," this neo-noir masterpiece follows a private investigator who uncovers a web of corruption involving the city's water rights and a dark family secret. It's based on real Los Angeles history and gets better every time you watch it.
2. Sunset Boulevard (1950)
- Director: Billy Wilder
- Writers: Billy Wilder, Charles Brackett, D.M. Marshman Jr.
- Cast: William Holden, Gloria Swanson, Erich von Stroheim
I absolutely adore this movie. Most screenwriters do. It's a bit of a cynical look at the dark side of Hollywood fame and how little respect writers get in general. We follow an out-of-work screenwriter who becomes the "kept man" of a faded silent film star who lives in a decaying mansion. It starts with death and leads to more of it.
3. L.A. Confidential (1997)
- Director: Curtis Hanson
- Writers: Brian Helgeland, Curtis Hanson (based on the James Ellroy novel)
- Cast: Guy Pearce, Russell Crowe, Kevin Spacey, Kim Basinger
Hollywood is a massive part of LA, but so is the LAPD. When you mash them together, you get this movie. This stylish thriller follows three very different detectives as they investigate a mass murder at a diner. They expose police corruption and the seedy underbelly of the "glamorous" studio era that covered the entire city.
4. Boyz n the Hood (1991)
- Director/Writer: John Singleton
- Cast: Cuba Gooding Jr., Ice Cube, Laurence Fishburne, Morris Chestnut
This movie was so important when it came out, and it's even more so to this day. It's a powerful, grounded look at life in South Central L.A. It tells the story of three young men growing up amidst gang violence and police harassment. We see a side of LA we don't normally get, and a reality we need to face.
5. Mulholland Drive (2001)
- Director/Writer: David Lynch
- Cast: Naomi Watts, Laura Harring, Justin Theroux
Los Angeles can be cryptic, confusing, and a little sexy. And so is this movie. We follow an aspiring actress and an amnesiac woman as they navigate a mystery that blurs the lines between reality and nightmare on the winding roads of the titular road. It's a bonkers movie.
6. Blade Runner (1982)
- Director: Ridley Scott
- Writers: Hampton Fancher, David Peoples (based on Philip K. Dick)
- Cast: Harrison Ford, Rutger Hauer, Sean Young
What does LA look like in the future? Well, technically, this movie exists in the past now, but you get my drift. This movie reimagines the city as a rain-soaked, neon-drenched dystopia where a "blade runner" must hunt down bioengineered replicants hiding among humans.
7. Heat (1995)
- Director/Writer: Michael Mann
- Cast: Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Val Kilmer
Can you handle people coming after you? Chasing you? Where would you hide in this city? This is the definitive L.A. crime saga. It pits a dedicated LAPD detective against a professional thief, and uses the city’s vast freeway systems, industrial zones, and modernist architecture as a tactical playground for a cat-and-mouse movie you'll never forget.
8. La La Land (2016)
- Director/Writer: Damien Chazelle
- Cast: Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone
Los Angeles has this magical quality. One where it feels like the city can come alive for you. This is a vibrant, modern musical that serves as a love letter to the city's artistic ambition and the people who embody it. It showcases iconic landmarks like Griffith Observatory and the Colorado Street Bridge while exploring the sacrifices made to stay here.
9. Clueless (1995)
- Director/Writer: Amy Heckerling
- Cast: Alicia Silverstone, Paul Rudd, Brittany Murphy
This movie absolutely rocks and holds up so well. The fashion may have changed, but the city has not. It's all windy highways, big schools, and the elites still run things. The movie itself is a clever modernization of Jane Austen’s Emma, complete with mall trips, valley slang, and the social hierarchy of high school.
10. The Big Lebowski (1998)
- Directors/Writers: Joel and Ethan Coen
- Cast: Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Julianne Moore
When people ask me to define cult classic movies, I just say this title. It captures a specific, laid-back L.A. subculture. "The Dude," a quintessential slacker and bowler, gets embroiled in a complex kidnapping plot because of a case of mistaken identity and a ruined rug.
