Is Super 8 Filmmaking Coming Back? A New Reusable Cartridge Could Change Everything

Well, this is certainly a major innovation announcement for a filmmaking system that hasn’t been relevant in over fifty years. (And an exciting development for those who want to shoot Super8!) A company called 0n8mil has introduced its new Re8mil, a daylight reloadable Super 8 cartridge system, which promises a new way of working with Super 8.

The system promises to be fully reusable and daylight loadable, making it a complete redesign of some of the major hallmarks of how Super 8 cameras have worked for decades and decades.

Now, keep in mind that the patent is pending, and this hasn’t been shared or tested with too many folks just yet, but for now, this is pretty cool and certainly worth exploring.

Super 8 for the 21st Century

So, as you can expect, this new 0n8mil Re8mil Super 8 cartridge system will work pretty much exactly as you’d think. It’s a Super 8 cartridge system that can be purchased from the company, where it will be delivered as a sealed supply magazine preloaded with 50 feet of film.

Users can then use the film in their Super 8 camera as they normally would, except they won’t have to do so in a darkroom or by changing the roll in their camera bag, as the Re8mil promises to be daylight-loadable.

Once done shooting with this roll of Super 8 film, users would simply need to remove the spool and return it to the _On8mil_lab for processing. The company shares that it will then refurbish and recycle the magazine and spool for continued use, while you’ll be able to keep your Re8mil cartridge, as it’s been engineered to last more than just one shoot.

Price and Availability

Sounds pretty great, right? We think so, as long as it works as it promises and as long as the company can actually get its patent approved, which is currently pending. Still, while Super 8 filmmaking isn’t super popular these days in favor of, you know, digital cameras and smartphones, it’s cool to see innovations and technologies coming to this analog format.

This could be big news for film schools or DIY creators looking to explore Super 8 for the first time. No more details about price or availability have been shared just yet, but we’ll be sure to share those details once they become available.

For now, though, you can find more info on the company’s website here.
