****In what might amount to a whole bunch of empty promises, the Chinese technology company behind the viral Seedance 2.0 AI video model has reportedly made some promises to “strengthen current safeguards” as it faces legal threats and backlash for its blatantly apparent use of copyrighted materials.

With Disney being the biggest name, perhaps, to come out against ByteDance, the company has reportedly sent a cease-and-desist letter to the Chinese company, accusing it of clearly violating Disney’s copyrighted materials, which clearly show up in a ton of AI-generated content.

Here’s what we know so far, and why it also sounds like, despite these temporary measures, it doesn’t sound like much is likely to be resolved soon.

Seedance 2.0 Controversy

Released just over a week ago, Seedance 2.0 has quickly showcased both phenomenal results and raised a hell of a lot of red flags. Viral AI-generated videos have sprung up all over the internet in the wake of Seedance 2.0 going live, and major players in Hollywood and across the world have all chimed in.

However, according to the BBC, major studios like Disney have quickly worked to threaten legal action against the Chinese company for what many can clearly see to be copyright infringement, as Seedance 2.0 seems especially adept at generating iconic Star Wars and Marvel characters, which are part of Disney’s intellectual property.

In a statement shared with BBC, ByteDance claims that it “respects intellectual property rights and we have heard the concerns regarding Seedance 2.0."

The ByteDance statement goes on to say that the company is “taking steps to strengthen current safeguards as we work to prevent the unauthorised use of intellectual property and likeness by users."

What Comes Next?

Yet, as the same BBC article points out, the Chinese company has not gone on to share any additional insights into how Seedance 2.0 has been trained and how it plans to strengthen these safeguards, which it claims to be using to respect intellectual property rights.

Overall, while the legal battles might be messy and involve geopolitical aspects, they also might be the best and most direct way for anything to actually challenge the AI tech companies and bring any sort of protection against blatant copyright abuse.

We’ll see what changes, if anything, in the short term with Seedance 2.0 and other AI models, which will undoubtedly continue to keep coming out and improving upon each other. For now, though, we’ll wait like the rest of the filmmaking world to see what frameworks might eventually be developed to govern and regulate this new age of AI.
