"textContent": "\n\n\n\nSometimes the boring love stories won't cut it on the most romantic holidays. You get a little sick of seeing happy couples, and instead, you want to see some screaming.\n\nThat's why I wanted to put together a list of horror and thriller movies I think will throw a wrench into Valentine's Day.\n\nThese are some titles guaranteed to shake up the day and possibly ruin the mood, in a good way.\n\nLet's dive in.\n\n* * *\n\n### 1. My Bloody Valentine (1981)\n\n\n\n\n * **Director:** George Mihalka\n * **Writer:** John Beaird\n * **Cast:** Paul Kelman, Lori Hallier, Neil Affleck\n\n\n\nThe undisputed heavyweight champion of February 14th horror. It knows it, too. While the 2009 Jensen Ackles remake is fun, it doesn't hold a candle to the Canadian original, which has a gritty atmosphere that feels more authentic. It is also so scary. It has a gas-mask-wearing killer, a pickaxe, and a town that really should have just cancelled the dance after bodies showed up.\n\n### 2. Heart Eyes (2025)\n\n\n\n\n * **Director:** Josh Ruben\n * **Writer:** Christopher Landon, Phillip Murphy, Michael Kennedy\n * **Cast:** Olivia Holt, Mason Gooding, Devon Sawa\n\n\n\nI thought this was a fun twist on the romantic comedy, and it had such a genius conceit: Two coworkers pulling an overtime shift on Valentine’s Day get mistaken for a couple by a serial killer who exclusively targets lovers. It’s a modern slasher that knows exactly when to be funny and when to be mean.\n\n### 3. The Love Witch (2016)\n\n\n\n\n * **Director:** Anna Biller\n * **Writer:** Anna Biller\n * **Cast:** Samantha Robinson, Gian Keys, Laura Waddell\n\n\n\nOkay, this is an entry from left field. If your partner is into \"aesthetic\" horror, this is a good one to show them that may even impress them. It’s filmed to look exactly like a 60s Technicolor dream, but the story follows a witch accidentally killing the guys she's into. It's a weird one, but I dig it.\n\n### 4. Fresh (2022)\n\n\n\n\n * **Director:** Mimi Cave\n * **Writer:** Lauryn Kahn\n * **Cast:** Daisy Edgar-Jones, Sebastian Stan, Jonica T. Gibbs\n\n\n\nThere are many dating app horror stories, but Daisy Edgar-Jones has it worse in this cannibalistic tale. _Fresh_ starts as what feels like a charming indie rom-com before taking a hard, terrifying left turn about 30 minutes in, where you get a serial killer with a real appetite.\n\n### 5. Valentine (2001)\n\n\n\n\n * **Director:** Jamie Blanks\n * **Writer:** Donna Powers, Wayne Powers, Kevin Falco\n * **Cast:** Denise Richards, David Boreanaz, Marley Shelton, Katherine Heigl\n\n\n\nI feel like this is the movie I saw at sleepovers in the early 2000s. It's a story about a group of friends who are stalked by a killer in a Cherub mask who sends them gruesome, rhyming Valentine cards. It feels nostalgic and horrific. And the nu-metal soundtrack thumps.\n\n### 6. Bones and All (2022)\n\n\n\n\n * **Director:** Luca Guadagnino\n * **Writer:** David Kajganich\n * **Cast:** Taylor Russell, Timothée Chalamet, Mark Rylance\n\n\n\nThis is a slow burn of a movie, but it has some stars and is perfectly dark enough to ruin the night. It's a road trip movie about two young cannibals finding love on the fringes of society. It’s both heartbreaking and beautiful, and incredibly graphic when they start eating people.\n\n### 7. Bride of Chucky (1998)\n\n\n\n\n * **Director:** Ronny Yu\n * **Writer:** Don Mancini\n * **Cast:** Jennifer Tilly, Brad Dourif, Katherine Heigl\n\n\n\nSometimes you just need a popcorn movie that's oh so much fun. This is the moment the _Child's Play_ franchise embraced the camp, and I think it was much better for it. We got to meet Jennifer Tilly as Tiffany, and it changed horror forever. The chemistry between the two plastic dolls is genuinely better than most human rom-coms.\n\n### 8. Audition (1999)\n\n\n\n\n * **Director:** Takashi Miike\n * **Writer:** Daisuke Tengan\n * **Cast:** Ryo Ishibashi, Eihi Shiina\n\n\n\nThis movie rocks. Everyone should see it. It has this creepy premise that goes haywire: A widower decides to \"audition\" a new wife under the guise of a film casting call. He thinks he’s found the perfect, submissive woman, but he couldn't be more wrong, as she revolts and decides to teach him a lesson. The first hour is a slow-burning drama; the final twenty minutes will haunt you for the rest of your life and make you possibly sick.\n\n### 9. Crimson Peak (2015)\n\n\n\n\n * **Director:** Guillermo del Toro\n * **Writer:** Guillermo del Toro, Matthew Robbins\n * **Cast:** Mia Wasikowska, Tom Hiddleston, Jessica Chastain\n\n\n\nGuillermo del Toro doesn’t make horror movies; he makes gothic romances that happen to have ghosts in them. If you want something lush and atmospheric, this story of a haunted mansion and a \"perfect\" husband with a dark secret is the move. It has all the costumes of a period drama and all the blood from a ton of corpses to truly scare you. And incest!\n\n### 10. Let the Right One In (2008)\n\n\n\n\n * **Director:** Tomas Alfredson\n * **Writer:** John Ajvide Lindqvist\n * **Cast:** Kåre Hedebrant, Lina Leandersson\n\n\n\nOne of the best horror movies I have ever seen. This Swedish masterpiece is the ultimate vampire love story that blows every single other version of this story out of the water. It’s about a lonely, bullied boy who falls for the girl next door, only to realize she’s an ancient vampire. It’s snowy, quiet, and deeply moving. You get a look at bullying, health, security, and parenting, all in one brutal movie.\n\n## Summing It All Up\n\nThese are all a lot of weird movies that I think can change up the boring motions most people deal with on Valentine's Day. It's such a goofy holiday, I think it's best to just switch it up once in a while and embrace the darkness.\n\nLet me know what you think in the comments.",
