In 1047, someone buried four kilos of silver beside a Norwegian river. They never came back.

On the tenth of April, two friends asked a farmer if they could walk his field with a metal detector.
The farmer said yes.
The field, which had been quietly sitting there for a thousand years minding its own business, started beeping.
It has not really stopped since.
What came out of the ground over the next three weeks was the largest Viking-age silver hoard ever found in Norway.
And whoever put it there never came back.
The full piece. It is a long read and worth every minute of it.
