New England Revolution snapshot

New England were no one's pick in preseason to be one of the best teams in the Eastern Conference, but they've been that through the first few months of the season.

The Revs enter the match in second place in the East with 22 points from 11 matches, and only two points behind Nashville. They've played at Gillette Stadium six times this season, and they've won all six. Recent weeks have been a high-wire act, needing late winners over Philadelphia and Charlotte to keep their perfect record alive, but they've been formidable.

"What's gone so right is the expected vibes (xVibes) are immaculate and the Revs keep finding ways to win games," The Blazing Musket 's Jake Catanese said about the Revs this week. "Multiple late winners and come-from-behind victories already this year to go along with a seemingly endless supply of confidence and players wanting to run through a brick wall for Marko Mitrović."

The former US youth national team coach has installed a fairly standard 4-2-3-1 shape, but has gotten a bit creative with personnel. Midfielder Alhassan Yusuf has moved from central midfield into a more advanced role as a wide attacker, while center back Ethan Kohler has found himself playing as a No. 6. Even left back Will Sands has been pushed to the opposite flank, with injuries limiting natural options in the position.

With Carles Gil pulling the strings, this is a Revs team that knows how to pull results out of anywhere. There has been an element of luck to some of their wins, though, with the underlying numbers less-than-positive on their performances. They have the third-worst expected goal difference in the East, sitting at -6.44 xGD, a sharp contrast to their +7 goal differential.

Good teams find ways to get results, even when their performances aren't ideal. Nashville have done this multiple times already this year. But is it sustainable for the Revolution at such a drastic statistical overperformance? Taking on one of the top statistical teams in the league is a good litmus test.

Nashville weren't great in the first 45 minutes of their 2-2 draw to DC United on Saturday, looking incredibly lethargic and flat after their Concacaf Champions Cup elimination midweek. They surged back in the final 15 minutes, and Warren Madrigal 's point-saving brace swung momentum fully back to them, a strange thing to say after a home draw against a poor DC side.

The big question right now for Nashville – and over their next three matches before the World Cup break – is how they'll handle the injuries, particularly in midfield. Eddi Tagseth and Patrick Yazbek both won't be back before the break, leaving Nashville suddenly thin in the center of the pitch.

Bryan Acosta was excellent against Tigres, but really struggled against DC United. Rookie Charles-Émile Brunet , signed as a SuperDraft pick this winter, looked much better in his 35-minute shift. Could BJ Callaghan hand the 22-year-old his first start on the road in Foxborough?
