Cambodia and Vietnam have pledged stronger cultural and political ties as the relationship turns 60 next year. Both aim to push cross-border economic activities while building closeness through frequent high-level exchanges. Prime Minister Hun Manet and Vietnam’s top leaders made the vow at meetings on June 8 during the Cambodian leader’s official visit to Hanoi and his participation at the 3rd ASEAN Future Forum (AFF). Both sides discussed the upcoming celebration of the 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties for which they reaffirmed their commitment for deeper cultural and political cooperation. For broader economic and trade cooperation, Hun Manet asked the Vietnamese side to speed up transport border crossings by revising regulations. Vietnam shares the longest land border with Cambodia, stretching over 1,270km. Both sides have deepened ties not only as neighbors but also as economic partners and traditional friends. Although the status has yet to reach a strategic partnership, both have enjoyed the cooperation under bilateral, regional and international frameworks, with Vietnam being number three among Cambodia’s economic partners. In the first four months, trade reached over $3.36 billion, up 4.3 percent on the same period last year. In a separate meeting, Hun Manet and Tran Thanh Man, President of National Assembly of Vietnam, expressed optimism that Cambodia-Vietnam cooperation will be furthered, building on the implementation of agreements between both countries. “Both commended the continuing legislative cooperation while reaffirming to strengthen the relations in bilateral and international frameworks,” Hun Manet said. He also acknowledged that frequent visits between high-level delegations have significantly contributed to enhancing ties between the governments. Both also discussed potential areas in the relationship, such as economy, trade and investment, politics, security and defence, education and vocational training, tourism and culture. They also spoke of infrastructure connectivity, specifically the Phnom Penh-Bavet Expressway, Ho Chi Minh City-Moc Bai Expressway and more direct flights.
