Volkswagen of America has confirmed that the ID. Buzz will return to the United States for model year 2027 after sitting out the 2026 calendar, and the relaunch arrives with a meaningful expansion of the lineup rather than a straight carryover. The 2027 ID. Buzz now includes a new Tourer trim aimed at overnight camping, a pair of new 4Motion all-wheel-drive configurations, updated infotainment software, a North American Charging Standard adapter, and a nostalgic Candy White over Cherry Red two-tone paint scheme that recalls the original Type 2 Microbus. Volkswagen said select 2027 vehicles will begin reaching showrooms in August, with the rest of the lineup arriving through early 2027. The most consequential consumer takeaway is that prospective buyers who want a factory-ready camping setup will not need to commission an aftermarket conversion. The new ID. Buzz Tourer is built on the Pro S 4Motion model and adds a fold-out mattress with platform, window blinds, front window ventilation panels, exterior table and chairs, and Overnight Mode software that reconfigures interior and exterior vehicle functions for sleeping in the vehicle. Volkswagen drew the Tourer concept from the European “Good Night Package,” and the US version layers in a retractable tow hitch, Captain’s Chairs, an electrochromic smart roof, Area View camera coverage, and 20-inch dark graphite wheels with black inserts. These additions move the ID. Buzz from a stylish electric people-mover to a recreational vehicle that competes more directly with adventure-trim electric vans like the Kia PV5 Wkndr concept. Volkswagen has not yet released pricing for the 2027 model year or final EPA range figures, and the company said those details will be announced closer to launch. Two of the four trims are new, and the addition of 4Motion at multiple price points addresses one of the most frequent complaints from US buyers about earlier model years, when all-wheel drive sat at the top of the lineup and forced anyone who wanted traction for snow or unpaved roads to pay for the highest-priced configuration. Software, charging, and connected services All 2027 ID. Buzz models receive Volkswagen’s latest ID.S 6 software, an Android-based platform that adds a refreshed navigation home screen, a redesigned vehicle settings page, and access to a new in-vehicle App Store. The App Store enables installation of third-party applications, including YouTube and Spotify, directly on the infotainment system. Volkswagen is bundling premium connected services into a single In-Vehicle Premium subscription for the 2027 model year, and ID. Buzz buyers receive a one-year trial. The subscription includes Premium Navigation with real-time traffic and online points of interest, Premium Speech with ChatGPT integration, Premium Radio access to more than 30,000 stations and one million podcasts, and Wi-Fi hotspot capability. The 2027 ID. Buzz also ships with a North American Charging Standard adapter, a meaningful change for owners who want access to Tesla’s Supercharger network without having to source the adapter separately. NACS, formally standardized as SAE J3400, allows vehicles equipped with a Combined Charging System port to plug into Tesla’s network via a passive adapter, and Volkswagen’s decision to include one in the box aligns with an increasingly common industry practice. Readers unfamiliar with the standard can review our explainer on NACS charging for additional background. One-pedal driving, which had been absent from earlier US-spec ID. Buzz models are now part of the 2027 specification as well. Driver assistance updates Photo credit: Volkswagen Volkswagen has expanded the Travel Assist suite on the ID. Buzz alongside other 2027 models, including the redesigned Atlas, the Golf family, and the Tiguan. The system now supports assisted lane changes with an “on hold” wait-for-clear function that delays the maneuver until adjacent lane traffic clears, along with improved lane centering and an enhanced predictive Adaptive Cruise Control feature. Emergency Assist has also been upgraded, and it can now automatically move the vehicle to the right shoulder and bring it to a halt if the system detects no driver interaction, which is intended to mitigate situations involving medical emergencies or driver incapacitation. The 2027 ID. Buzz also benefits from new connected services, such as myQ Connected Garage, AirConsole gaming via passengers’ smartphones, and support for What3Words addresses for precise navigation. Color and trim simplification Volkswagen has trimmed the ID. Buzz color palette for 2027 in an effort to reduce build complexity. Only two-tone paint schemes will be offered, and the headline addition is a new Candy White over Cherry Red combination with white wheels that draws on the original Type 2 Microbus color scheme. The change is likely to be polarizing among buyers who preferred the single-tone palette, but it allows Volkswagen to streamline production while delivering a paint option that leans into the model’s heritage appeal. The top trim now offers an optional 21-inch wheel package for buyers who want a larger wheel without stepping outside the factory configuration. Why the ID. Buzz was off in 2026 Photo credit: Volkswagen The 2027 return follows a model-year gap that Volkswagen had described in late 2025 as a strategic pause rather than a cancellation. The company said at the time that current EV market conditions did not support a 2026 production run, and it pointed dealers to remaining 2025 inventory to bridge customer demand into the new launch. The result was a roughly year-long stretch in which US showrooms had only existing inventory, with deep discounts emerging in late 2025 and early 2026 as dealers worked through stock. The 2027 launch is the company’s signal that the ID. Buzz remains part of the long-term US lineup, alongside the ID.4 and the broader Volkswagen electric strategy previewed by Europe-bound models like the ID. Cross concept. Industry context For Volkswagen, the 2027 ID. Buzz represents an attempt to find the model’s audience after a first US chapter that delivered slow sales and steep markdowns. The introduction of a camping-oriented Tourer trim positions the ID. Buzz against an emerging segment of electric adventure vans and recreation-ready EVs that has so far been dominated by concepts and limited-production builds rather than mainstream offerings. Adding 4Motion at multiple price points, including a midline 4Motion variant that pairs the popular Pro S trim with all-wheel drive, broadens the model’s appeal to buyers in regions where rear-drive-only configurations are a non-starter. For buyers, the practical questions remain pricing, range, and dealer availability. Volkswagen has not yet shared final figures for any of those, but the company confirmed that initial 2027 vehicles, including ID. Buzz units are expected at dealers starting in August, with the broader lineup phased in through early 2027. The relaunch also folds in updated software, expanded driver assistance, and a charging adapter that owners had been asking for since the model first arrived, which together should make the 2027 ID. Buzz a more competitive product than the version it replaces.
