Review: Batman and Superman - Battle of the Super Sons
I should start this off my saying I am a diehard fan of Superman, Batman, and their super sons. The former two have been part of my life for as long as I can remember, meanwhile Damian Wayne & Jonathan Samuel Kent are relatively later additions. Still, I adore the both of them, and (even if you're not familiar with them) I'm positive you will too after seeing this film.
The Super-Sons, reinvented for the 21st Century and brought to life by Peter J. Tomasi, are perhaps one of the best things DC has going for it these days. The dynamic between Damian & Jon is absolutely unbeatable, and thankfully the film does not fail to deliver it. In it, we get a (kinda unnecessary?) retelling of how Superman arrived on Earth, but more importantly it introduces us to Jonathan Kent - unpowered and unaware of the extraordinary nature of his family.
The film takes us through Jon's story as he discovers who he really is, and gives us plenty to latch onto for sympathy with Damian even as he can be... a bit much, sometimes. Speaking for myself, as these versions of the characters don't necessarily line up 1:1 with their beloved comic book counterparts, I still ended up feeling for the two of them pretty quickly.
It's a very well-made film that knows exactly when to swing and when to miss - which makes it all the better when it hits that home run in the end. Show it to your friends, show it to your kids if you have any - heck, show it to your folks, even if they've been out of superhero comics for a while! It's a really damn good film, and worthy of being held up to any theatrical release.
If I had to rank it among Superman films, I'd place it at a respectable third place (just behind Superman 1 & 2 by Richard Donner). If I had to rank it among Batman films, I'd say it's honestly even better than the excellent LEGO Batman Movie - putting itself in second place, just behind... well, either the 60's Batman film or Batman Returns, depending on my mood.
But the truth is, it's not really a Superman or Batman film. This is Superboy & Robin's movie, and I only hope we get to see more of these two together. :)
