"textContent": "If you want to support my independent reporting, subscribe for free. You can also become a supporting member. 🍻 Cheers!\nOur tools are changing fast and from talking to many creatives throughout the industry, for the better. The ability to rotoscope without the time or skills to actually rotoscope the old way is a powerful tool to put into an everyday creatives hands.\nWith everything changing so fast, staying with the technology will keep us competitive, efficient and relevant. I wanted to dive in and see what our tools are doing with AI and what that means for us. I'll be following this space to make sure we're squeezing these tools for all they can offer.\nAdobe\nAdobe has aggressively placed AI throughout their software line-up and notably some excellent features in Premiere Pro. They call their tech Adobe Sensei:\n> Adobe Sensei is Adobe’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) technology that operates across the Adobe platform, including Adobe Experience Cloud, Creative Cloud and Document Cloud. While Adobe Sensei does a lot across Adobe’s catalog, video editors encounter it most in programs like Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects. - Video Maker\nSome notable Premiere Pro features\n- Object Mask: A crowd favorite, I've heard from multiple peers that this is a game changer. Adobe's object mask is AI-powered automatic masking that tracks objects across every frame without manually tracking. Truly a time-saver and putting what was once expensive and time-consuming tech into all of our hands. Read more about it here.\n- Auto-reframing – Intelligently tracks action to keep subjects centered when converting between aspect ratios. Learn how to use it here.\n- Scene Edit Detection – This allows you to bring a video into your timelines and Premiere will automatically find the edit points. For example, if an editor sends you a string-out, you can just smash this button, and it'll find all the cut points without an XML or anything else to guide you. Time saving for sure. Learn how to use it here.\n- Text-Based Editing – Text based editing allows the editor to cut with the words from the interview. No more guessing at the waveform or listening at 2x speed - we can now just work through the transcript and cut with the words. Another insane time-saver. See how to use it here.\n\nThere's plenty more in Adobe's catalog, and it seems they'll always be developing features and new ideas. I will keep us updated as they release.\nCanon\n> In recent years, AI technology has progressed tremendously, and deep learning technology is now being used in many applications. As an industry-leading camera and lens manufacturer with unrivaled expertise in the field, Canon tackled the previously \"unsolvable\" problems of cameras caused by the principle of photography, by developing its own deep-learning image processing technology. - Canon Global\nThe three \"domains\" they're chasing here are noise reduction, color interpolation and Aberration/diffraction correction.\n- Noise reduction - this isn't a new technology, but Canon is claiming to counter \"false corrections\" with their propriety tech. The problem has been noise reduction degrades image (it does) and Canon \"unable to find a definitive solution\", they decided to pursue noise-reduction image processing that could produce clear, high-quality images with deep learning. \n- Color Interpolation - They're calling this “Neural network Demosaic.” It reduces moire, false colors and \"jaggies\"\n- Aberration and diffraction - called the \"Neural network Lens Optimizer\". Canon used machine learning to absolutely dial in their lenses. \"For every lens that Canon produces, it has a complete grasp of the aberrations and diffraction blur of the lens during development and design. By fully leveraging its simulation technology, Canon therefore could create numerous high-precision pairs of student images with aberration and diffraction blurring and teacher images without those undesirable effects, based on such product data as design values for each lens model, and used them as training data for deep learning.\"\n\nRED\nRED, with their recent purchase by Nikon, has integrated NVIDIA Holoscan Integration in their V-Raptor XL and V-Raptor cameras.\n> The integration with NVIDIA Holoscan for Media empowers media professionals to harness the full potential of both technologies. NVIDIA Holoscan for Media is designed to handle complex live media workflows with unprecedented efficiency. It supports SMPTE ST 2110 video standards, ensuring compatibility with industry-leading video transport protocols and enhancing real-time media processing. In addition to offering robust video support, NVIDIA Holoscan for Media integrates seamlessly with AI libraries. This synergy can allow advanced analytics and real-time insights, enabling media professionals to make informed decisions on the fly and enhance the overall production quality. - RED\nTheir first camera with Nikon, the ZR 6K Cinema Camera features Nikon's \"deep learning-based AI technology: Smart detection of nine object types, including people and vehicles.\"\nSony\nThis isn't technically a tool, but I found it interesting: \n> Sony Pictures has joined the outcry against Seedance 2.0, the Chinese video platform that has united Hollywood studios in their condemnation of AI-generated copyright infringement. In a cease and desist letter sent Wednesday, the studio demanded that ByteDanceimmediately remove its valuable IP — including “Breaking Bad” and the “Spider-Verse” films — from the Seedance AI training data. - Variety, 2026\nSo they're very in tune with what AI content could do to their business. With the announcement of the Sony FX2 in May 2025, it represents Sony's most AI-focused camera to date:\n- AI powered autofocus\n- Auto framing - keeps subjects composed\n- Dynamic Active AI-based stabilization\n- An improved processor specifically designed to handle these AI tasks.\n\nRead all about the FX2 at newshooter.com\nARRI\nARRI is a company that has spent the last century defining what our images look like and should look like. They made a recent strategic move with AI device ecosystem HONOR.\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jDpkxqeP5m4\n> Together, we will integrate ARRI’s Image Science into future consumer devices, bringing professional filmmaking capabilities for the new generation of creators.\nAnd the first product from this collaboration is called the Robot Phone:\n> a revolutionary camera device equipped with a gimbal designed from the ground up. It features a specialized motor system that enables it not only to perform gimbal stabilization duties but also power the robot’s expressive articulations. It is touted as the industry’s smallest 4-DoF gimbal system. The camera system, developed in collaboration with ARRI, features a built-in edge AI large model and a 200 MP 3-axis gimbal camera. - Mike Shouts\nThis is all a very interesting play by ARRI and makes total sense with headlines like this: Arri to Close Two Facilities Amid Rapidly Changing Cinema Landscape.\nDJI\nReleased January 2025, the Matrice 4 has an AI computing platform for safer flights and more autonomy. \nOn the lower end of DJI's spectrum, their NEO drone incorporates AI similar to the medium and pro models do, so they're putting it from the top to bottom in their drone lineup.\n> the DJI Neo is that it uses artificial intelligence models that enable automatic tracking and image segmentation. What does this involve? Image segmentation is a technology that can recognize different parts of an image and objects, and then track their movement in real-time. - Source\nDJI has an intelligent computing platform that:\n> Combines cutting-edge computing power with drones to unleash productivity. \nFor example, using computer vision tech they're able to identify traffic congestion to easily monitor road conditions. Also, they've developed the ability to detect fire and smoke for safety reasons. A funny one but probably critical: hard hat recognition and detection to make sure your worksite has hard hats on. These are all very practical tools to be used with drones and I'm sure that technology will make the jump to their camera drones.\nAvid\nAvid has developed Avid Ada, an AI engine that powers several of their features. \n- ScriptSync AI – Automatically synchronizes text scripts with video footage to quickly locate specific dialogue or scenes\n- PhraseFind AI – Searches through all clips to find specific phrases spoken in footage\n- AI-powered transcription – Speech-to-text tools integrated directly into the timeline, similar to Adobe.\n\nI think the key difference between Avid and Premiere - Adobe has an entire ecosystem that enables generative AI and automations for creative tasks. Whereas Avid's AI tool set is much more traditional in the editorial sense. Still helpful but squarely aimed at the media professionals that use it.\nFCP (Apple)\nApple has been knocked for falling behind in the AI race, but I feel they're doing as Apple does: making sure things are perfect. It'll be interesting to see where one of the world's largest company falls in this game. They recently announced a partnership with Google Gemini, they've lost a ton of AI talent all while boasting some of the best privacy features in AI that exist. Obviously, a company to watch in general. \nFor their NLE FCPX, Apple uses their neural engine for several features:\n- Magnetic Mask - similar to Adobe's auto mask and rotoscope.\n- Transcribe to captions - again, seemingly, another standard feature for a modern NLE.\n- Enhanced Light and Color - it's basically auto-color that you can work on manually once settings are applied. \n- Smooth Slow-Mo - remember Twixtor?! It basically does the same thing but built into FCPX, read more here.\n- Smart reframing - again an Adobe feature to assist with aspect ratio conversion.\n\nIt's a pretty impressive feature set for an NLE you don't hear about much. I've always known my work in FCPX to be fast. With features like this, maybe it's even faster.\nDaVinci Resolve\nDaVinci has gone all in on AI, knowing with Adobe and Apple out there they have to continue competing in the space. You can find a grip of their features here, and I'll list a few of the notable ones below.\n- AI IntelliScript - similar to Avid, a traditional editorial tool made much easier by AI.\n- AI Multicam SmartSwitch - Insane! This automatically switches in a multi-cam timeline to the active speaker. It uses audio, obviously, but also lip movement to detect when to switch.\n- AI Magic Mask - a standard feature in an AI powered NLE and I think we're all happier for it.\n- Intellitrack AI Tracking - optimizing tracking and stabilization in the color and Fusion pages.\n- AI SuperScale - 3x to 4x enhanced upscaling of media. They say it's perfect for archival material that has to fit the deliverable resolution.\n\nUpdate: DaVinci recently release Resolve 21 with many new AI features. I'll be covering them at another time but CineD has you covered for now.\nI know we can doom and gloom on AI taking our jobs.\nWith these tools, it's obvious AI can help us do our work better than before. We still use our creative brains to make the content, just faster with more powerful tools in our hands. I'll be watching this space to make sure we don't miss any relevant updates. \nUntil next time.",
